Advise an Ignoramus about Xbox 360

Hi all,
I'm considering trying to find a good, used xbox 360, because a friend of mine won't let up about how great Skyrim is. I thought I'd get the PC version (I have a good gaming PC) but another friend says the loading screens for the PC version of Skyrim will drive me crazy. It looks like I can get a used xbox for about $70-100, but then there are all these different types. I know nothing but what I've read in reviews, and don't know what I should be looking for. I don't have any intention of doing online gaming (not my cup of tea), but I guess you do need to go online for updates? At the moment the only game I'm interested in is Skyrim Elder Scrolls but I could see buying The Sims 4 if I like using the xbox when that one comes out. Anyway, I'd really be grateful for some advice. Get the xbox 360 4GB? The 250? The "Arcade" version??? Help.

Thanks in advance...

- Sophia

I don't know about Skyrim, but on Oblivion the loading was terrible on Xbox. I can't imagine Skyrim was any better.

Depending how good your PC is, I'd just get it for PC.

"I have a good gaming PC" = GET IT FOR PC.

The 360 version is not the way to paly that game. Ditto PS3.

what they said.

There are loading screens for skyrim, I don't remember them being particularly bad.

And, with the mod community being what is on the pc, you can play the game 5 times, with different mods, and get 5 completely different experiences.

the pc verison, without a doubt, is the way to go if you can.

Large areas take around 3-5 seconds to load on my PC, vs 30-50 seconds on an Xbox360. Small interior areas take a fraction of a second, but would still take 10-15 seconds on an Xbox360.

My PC is nothing special either. Just a typical mid range system, with a cheap SSD installed.

I obviously don't know the details of your PC but I can tell you, as someone who has the XBox and PC versions of Skyrim - the load times are *dramatically* lower on PC if the PC is something which is even worthy of Skyrim being played on it... unless it's a very odd configuration of hardware.

Loading time in Skyrim was atrocious on the PS3. I actually bought an SSD just for this purpose alone to try to speed it up. It helped slightly, but not enough to justify the cost. I ended up pitting the SSD in my machine.

I know PS3 doesn't equal Xbox, but if I could do it again, I wouldn't have ever purchased the PS3 in the first place & just played it on PC.

If your PC has a multi platter 250GB 5400RPM HDD, your load times might be about 75% of what is expected on console. Otherwise, your PC will be significantly faster.

You should still get a sexbox360 and run it over with a monster truck outside of gamestop in front of your friend, filming his reaction and put it up on youtube. Also use 8mm film and complain about the "load times". Good times. Good times.

Whatever friend told you to avoid the PC version is a fool, such a fool that I would not speak to that person again... they are NOT to be trusted

This x100

Also, you should always get ES games on the PC for mods alone. Makes the games so much better.

There are some very valid reasons to get the console variants of PC games.

COD if you don't mind controllers and want the gigantic community that plays them on consoles.

Exclusives (duh, lol)

Local multiplayer stuff to share in the living room

Yadda yadda.

But yeah, ES games were born on PC, and with the glorious mods to Morrowwind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, they truly are insanely good on there compared to console.

A quick list :

Fixes that never make it to the console variants (unofficial bug fix packs/etc)
Mods that are MASSIVE, there are even entire new games from time to time(!!)
Better graphics and load times (with the right PC)
Customize the game towards your liking.

IMHO vanilla Oblivion was sort of broken (everything in the realm leveled with you). After some great mods, it really became the raw adventure I wanted it to be.

Not to mention the fact that U can infinitely spawn Lydia and put sexy chlothes on Ur wife and Lydia. I guess a. Husband to, but that sounds gross. Lol

Whoever told you to buy the console version of an Elder Scrolls game over the PC version is a flat-out ignoramus, and you'd be better off asking your cat.

If you have even a half way decent PC, there is simply no contest.
Buying a console for Skyrim would be like buying a PC for baseball games.

All these pro-PC comments are all predicated on their internal assumptions of their definition of "I have a good gaming PC" means.

If you say you have a good gaming PC because The Sims 2 plays at 30fps, that might not make the best PC for Skyrim.

I run Skyrim flawlessly, with texture mods, on a PC I built for ~$1200 at Christmas time of 2009.

Unless you're running some seriously dated hardware, or some eMachines, Skyrim just isn't going to tax too many PCs.
