AGP slot? wth?

I'm looking at the a7n8x agp slot, the notches are correct in my ATI 9600 Pro, but for my older AGP ATI Rage, it's reverse! What the heck is going on?!?!

could be :
(a) your rage won't run at 1.5v and the mb requires it
(b) your rage is PCI

It's not PCI, that I'm sure of. What to do, this is confusing, I didn't know they changed the AGP standard so older AGP cards wouldn't fit. That's the only thing I can think of.

agp 2x cards do not work in a 4x/8x slot. not sure if they changed the orientation of the slot though...

Your card is probably a 3.3v agp 2x card. They changed the slot to prevent people from inserting a card that used the wrong voltage.

This can't be right, this card is an ATI Rage 128, it fits into my IWill KK266-R motherboard. So it has fit into 4x slot.

AGP 4x/8x only have 2 notches...

2x has 4 i believe.

The KK266-R has a universal AGP slot (w/o breaks) so it can accept both agp 1.0 and 2.0 cards.

The ATI card that you speak of has 1 notch in the gold finger contact closest to the metal bracket and 1 only. This is only an agp 1.0 compliant card (1x/2x).

3.3V agp cards aren't compatible. Only are compatible if they have a switch on them to run at 1.5v and they can fit in the slot.

You might consider something like this $35 Transcend if you want to pick up something for just ordinary day-to-day usage.

By the way, anyone want to tell me if these powered-by-ATI cards use normal ATI drivers? Any big drawbacks?

Powered b ATI cards do use the regular Catalyst drivers. The early Cats had problems with them, but since 2.4(not sure what the first Cat were) they work fine.
