Ah, More Stupid Newegg "Reviews"

Here is an example I saw when looking into an AIW X1900 for another poster.

Great

Pros: The card can run any game max settings. I have FEAR maxed, and Ghost Recon Maxed with AA and HDR. I also have a normal 450W supply, with a 6-4 pin adapter, and workes great for me. Runs hot with st...
ock cooler.

Cons: None... More »

Other Thoughts: Get it

Um...yeah, GRAW doesn't even have AA. And then he gives the "No Con" product a 4/5?!?

I'm sure everyone has seen some stupid stuff on the Newegg reviews, so if you see anymore, feel free to post them here. I'm thinking about writing Newegg so that they can pay closer attention to them or moderate them a little bit so as not to misdirect potential buyers. For all I know, some of those reviews could be a form of viral marketing.

EDIT: Here is the page I found that comment on if someone wants to make sure I'm not making this stuff up:

More poster children for the importance of birth control.

It wouldn't surprise me if many of the reviews were "viral", done either by the retailer or manufacturers. In this case, he's probably just a moron.

LOL! QFT. I just remember when I was excited about a product and reading these reviews. They make you think, "Really? Dang!" but in reality, you learn the truth. Since that's how they made me feel before I knew better, I'm sure "they" as in either the retailer or the manufacturer know that that's what can happen.

As far as the "reviews" though, I think Newegg should at least try to filter out the ones that don't really help the buyer. I mean, some people post their review way too soon, like when you just open it and plug it in. And then those same people give it a 1/5 if that doesn't work, when they probably don't know what they're doing to begin with.

as flawed as the review process might be I still like the fact that it is there. I do agree that there should be a stop to stupid posts, and that whole thing with them xxxxxxing out your price that ticks me off.

What do you mean "xxxxxxing" out the price?

Like when you say

you got this item 2 weeks ago for $102 w/ coupon

It would show up as

you got this item 2 weeks ago for $xxx w/ coupon.

Probably to discourage people from posting...I got this at a better deal from somewhere else.

They also have a language filter...I tried to say " ' screwed ' up my motherboard and it asked me to edit it.

I always take Newegg reviews with a grain of salt. If a product does have a low score and a lot of poor reviews, its probably a good idea to research the product somewhere reliable before you buy it.

Any review when it comes to recommendations, I rather make up my own mind. But when it comes to certain improvements, I usually check components like batteries and the like.
Going from AA rechargeable NiMH to Lithium rechargeables is my point.
I've seen some Newegg horror comments on Seasonic S-12 600W, but I still bought one because of JonnyGuru's recommendations. I don't put too much value on customer comments.

Regardless of the intelligence of the poster, you did learn something about the product from this review and that is all that matters. You learned that it is fast, it works, and most importantly, the user is happy with the item.

I think as long as you don't take them to seriously they're helpful. But its amusing when some one says the product didn't work, lists their specs and you know why it didn't work based just on their comment.

Newegg's review guidelines are a joke. For instance, it says that your review cannot compare products!

I get annoyed with every review saying "NewEgg rocks!" You can only read that so many times under the same product to make you wonder if they were scoring it based on their love for NewEgg rather than their like of the product they bought.

What do you mean GRAW doesn't have AA ?

Is AA application dependent ? I thought it could be applied to any game.

The game engine will not run AA. It's incompatible with the lighting.

I got used to the game already and let me say that the lighting is incredible. The game is a resource hog but it seems to put it to better use than FEAR.

BTW, They both run flawless on my PC so I'm not pissed that it won't run right on my machine

You mean GRAW doesnt even support AA without HDR? That's just lame, and I dont buy their story on incompatibilities with lighting.

But the Newegg reviews are a joke, especially when they review a midrange card and say they can run modern games at maxed out settings. LOL...

you can easily distinguish betwen a noob's and a more of a seasoned user's review. People read these reviews mainly for product's reliability, defective prones, compatibilty, return rate etc..however, when it comes to a decision of buying a graphic card, I would do my own research by reading up professional reviews and alike.

i know what you mean. something like 2 out of 3 review say newegg rocks. i mean, maybe it does, but it seems as if newegg is giving itslef good reviews. frankly, i don't trust the review on newegg because of that and usually go somewhere else befor i make my decison.

I thought it was common knowledge that reviews at the Egg were 50% misinformed reviews from no0bs, and 50% sackriding by viral marketers.

I dont read those reviews for their accolades of the product. Look for the negative reviews to get a better picture.

I just think that if someone could go through and filter out the crap and worthless "review" an unknowledgable buyer might not get ripped off. I haven't got ripped off if that's what someone is wondering, but I have gottn tired of seeing every not-so-good product a 4 or 5 star rating while other really good products suffer from a 3/5 just because the owners reviewed it too early. Then, if that isn't the case, every product I look at is a 5/5!

They may not even need to sort through all of them and filter them. If newegg could devise some way to ask for a receipt number of the product, and then calculate how long the person has actually owned the thing we might be able to get better feedback. Sometimes they just ask questions like "how long have you owned this product" and "how good of an understanding do you have about your product", but if they requested like an item number or serial number or something, then no one could lie. And also, it may fix the instances where someone has actually bought the product somewhere else, but went ahead and gave a newegg "review". That to me is viral since they almost always have a comment, "Newegg Rocks" or something. I just rather have quality than quantity.

I love the video card reviews that go something like "It isn't out yet, but I know it's gonna be awesome. 5 Eggs!!".

The newegg review are very useful if you use them right. They are one more source of information among numerous sources. You should use sites like Anandtech to determine what features you want. You should look at the manufacturer?s site to see if the product meets your requirements. You should check the manufacturers support forums and the newegg reviews for any issues with that item. The positive feedback is not as useful, but the negative feedback can tell you if a bad lot has been released, or something of that nature.

Every product, no matter how good or bad it is, will have some who hate it and some who love it. Buyer beware still holds true. The reviews can only help alert you to potential problems.
