AI War: Fleet Command

It's currently 25% off on Steam, I wasn't even aware of it until a few minutes ago when I started Steam and saw a news page of it. It reminds me of an upcoming game called Gratuitous Space Battles, which seems to be in the same vein. It looks like it got nothing else than stellar reviews and overall gamers impressions, anyone tried it? If so, do you like it? Can it be compared to another game with which I could be more familiar with? It's very affordable so I might buy it, but I'm still curious. By the way that's the official web-site.

EDIT: I noticed that there's a trial version on the official web-site, I'll give that a try for sure.

I tried the demo months ago (when I created this thread last year), and it was a little too complex for my tastes, it's very strategic and it has nothing in common with "fast action" or "friendly interface", everything is cramped and small on the GUI as you play, you basically need to memorize dozens upon dozens of commands, and even though I did that in the past for other games I don't feel like that type of game is the one I want to play lately. It must be a good game for those who do like very strategic games however, maybe one day I will buy it. There's an expansion pack for it as well, only released two or three days ago in fact, it adds many new things.

But, for me, at least for now, I'll stay away from it, I'll keep Gratuitous Space Battles instead, it's more simple, user-friendly, and it achieves the same end goal (space battles).

Great game, but it isn't for everyone. You need to plan out your strategy for destroying the AI's homeworld. If you just go capturing every planet for resources the AI becomes more powerful and adapts to your strategy. So instead you need to take over key planets for whatever your plan is and only taking over some planets for additional resources.

I personally love the game and the dev cares about his game very much and is very open to suggestions and comments about it.

At the very least give the demo a try, it has a bunch of tutorial missions to teach you the game.

I had high hopes ... the videos made it appear a strong mix of RTS "action", some strategy, and base defense against wave after wave of enemies similar to tower defense games.

Instead, for me anyway, the strategy seems to be the dominant trait. For me it's not an intuitive strategy and therefor not very entertaining.

What's really frustrating is I bought this for a few friends. Hoping there would be levels that could play out like a co-op Tower Defense. If it's too complex or non-intuitive for me then it's WAY beyond what my friends will sit down and learn. (As a gauge on my "complexity/fun" level ... I play Eve Online.)

This isn't to say the game is a pile of crap. Hardly. It's just not the game I expected it to be from the videos that I saw.
