'Airbrushing' movies

My g/f is sure that music videos and adverts are airbrushed in a similar manner to the images put on the front of magazines, etc. I'm pretty sure that this would be impossible, as it would be very difficult to spray each frame (24 per second) in such a consistant way the changes made could not be noticed between frames. I would have thought that fancy computer filters would have been used instead in order to make the celebrities look bettter on the TV.

Does anyone know if manual airbrushing is performed on video?

It would have to be done digitally. Those film strips look to small to airbrush with detail on

Filters are definitely used for live and single run TV use.

Movies and other high dollar productions can use "frame by frame" processing. It's expensive but if you're trying to make Julia Roberts look half way decent, that's what you need to do.

They use soften filter quite a lot in XXX movies They was a report about the porn industry not being happy with the move to HDTV as it would show up some of their 'actors' in a bad light

The thought of "airbrushing" is not so far from the truth. It is not done on the material itself (although movies shot on film are chemically color corrected (or timed, as it is called) by an expert in the lab.
This is done with the director of photography, who is responsible for the "look" of a film. In the last
couple of years however, a process called "digital grading" has been used to achieve a certain look.
It is done on very expensive software/hardware systems similar to an editing station. One example would be an Inferno station. It is offered by a company called discreet, who also make 3d Studio max.

You can tune colors, softness and lightning. In the end, it is similar to "photoshopping a cover", just
on a WAY bigger scale.

yeah, I don't mean physically airbrushing the film strips, just as they don't physically airbrush the images in glamour magazines, etc. They use digital image processing...

I'm asking if they manually alter video using the airbrush tool of image editing software, or if they use a filter within video editing software...

its possible, just extremely time consuming. if any of you have premier, you can output your video clip as a "filmstrip" which will be a giant (i'm talking many gigs) photoshop file which has every single frame. then you go to work, and when you're done, you import it back into premiere. i had to do this once to make a "lightsaber" effect for a movie. 2 minutes of footage took about 15 hours (including all the processing time on my then 1.2ghz thunderbird)
but yeah its possible...i'd be inclined to think that to keep costs down for advertising they just use filters in whichever video production software they use.
