Or just an articulate man of principle, and a competent judge worthy of a Supreme Court position...who is not going to be baited into partisan tainted questions aimed at prolonging or otherwise derailing Bush's nomination.

Alito isn't saying anything. "I don't know." "I don't recall" "I've racked my brain..."

Only when they have hammered away on that stupid CAP stuff. When they have asked real questions he has answered them.

as long as I can recall that's always what you say to congress, just like the congress people don't recall where all their gifts and money came from

Aren't the Congressional Confirmation Hearings less about asking questions of a candidate to see if he's worthy
and more about letting the individual Senators pontificate, and blustwer from their soapboxes to confirm
to all the American People that Congressmen are in fact illiterate loons who should be
removed from office
and put behind bars to protect society from their boundless stupidity ?

I don't see a member of EITHER party saying anything of substance, and surely non deserves a singel vote for re-election.

Alito, on the other hand, just might be a Princeton Party Animal.

Enjoy it until the Supreme Court allows the President to do anything he da*m well pleases and America is a democracy in name only.

The democratic senators seemed to have forgotten the point of these precedings. It is to get to ask questions, not make political speeches aimed at the president.

Biden was on the today show this morning. The guy managed to turn the conversation into bashing bush. Even the liberal Katie Couric got frustrated with his blabbing and tried to get a straight answer from him.

he seems to be doing that already. besides, Bush is gone in 2yrs. Americans vote for these people, I guess we have to suffer for it.

I think these hearings have pretty much confirmed everything you have said.

I listened to some of the hearing yesterday. He strikes me as another Roberts in his views on Presidential power. He danced around the question of whether a President can immunize an underling from prosecution for crimes committed at the direction of the President. His answers suggest that he believes the President does have some authority in this arena while at the same time repeating the mantra that the President is not above the Constitution. Reading between the lines it seems to me that he may hold the view that the Constitution gives the President some authority to violate laws not of his liking.

I also found it implausible that Alito could join an organization, place this fact on his resume, and then not recall ever having been a member. The Reagan/North approach to dealing with unpleasantness in one's past.

I fear what a Democratic President will do as much as a Republican. We are only free because we have laws protecting our freedoms. Once the President can decide what the law means, in his opinion, you have a defacto dictatorship.

Or how about a judge that wants to give the President that "unitary moment" that Alito claimed that the President should have in a 2000 speech of the Federalist Society.

Alito believes that the President should be the Supreme Commander. For that and that alone, this man should NOT be on the Supreme Court.

Alito can believe all he wants, so long as he adheres to the Constitution and the concept of legal precedent...something his record clearly indicates, meaning that his personal feelings aside, we can expect Alito, like his predecessors, to not confuse personal beliefs with the mandate of the Supreme Court.

Also, if not the Constitution, then the American people, would never allow this to happen.

Enjoy it until the Supreme Court allows the President to do anything he da*m well pleases and America is a democracy in name only.
You guys have been spewing this crap for a couple of years now...still waiting for the rise of Bush's Fascist States of America...the doom and gloom some of you project is astonishing, but also amusing.

I keep hearing that Alito claims no one, not even the President, is above the Constitution or the laws set forth by congress.

I hope for our sake he really believes that.

I agree with some of the others here in that all these proceedings do is make our congress-members appear grossly inadequate, unintelligent, and lame. We need to clean house.
