I'm going to hold off and see what the Note 3 looks like as well as how the modding scene shakes out. Hoping they'll do RGB again for the Note 3 with best in class battery life without going over 5.5 inches.

HTC released the X+ with a larger battery as a refresh. If they do the same for the developer edition, I might get that instead too.

If iPhone was 5" and had 1920x1080 screen, it might matter. 1136x640 on 4" screen is so dated. It's like saying I have the best 42" 720p LCD TV when everyone else is enjoying 60" 1080p plasma TV.

Except 720p isn't sharp, while the ppi on an iPhone is. The plasma doesn't have screen door or blue whites either. So your comparison doesn't apply.

The iPhone 5's screen doesn't have the pixel count compared to the others, but its not 720p difference bad. Also the colors actually look like what they're supposed to look like. I'm still amazed by the iPhone 5's screen everyday and when I use an OLED, its colors are awful.

Tegra 4 gets ~4500 with A15 @ 1900MHz.
I think A15 @1200MHz will be as fast as the Snapdragon 600 with 1900MHz.

There's rumors that T4 is a tablet chip due to power draw.

"Estimated" Geekbench score for the Qualcomm version: 3003
Looks like I read the graph wrong...I thought the graph identified the Exynos version which I was trying to extrapolate to get the Qualcomm version based on HTC One's clockspeed.

That's what I get for not going to bed.

The Note 2 screen at least is an excellent one if you're not using Samsung's silly default settings.

Yeah. I don't mind the saturated default look but I noticed the option to change it and so I set it to natural and it's been that way since.

To me complaining about the saturated colors is like complaining about an icon on your homescreen. Just change it...

you can't just tweak gamma and RGB settings that easily.

it took a while before we got good color controls on the Nexus 4 for example. On the SGS2? Hopeless.

I'm talking about the Note 2. I'm assuming the S4 will have the same options if not more.

You have an option to change it to Samsung presets, which isn't the same as tweaking RGB and gamma. That's not really THAT much more choice.

Meh, I noticed a clear difference between Default and Natural. Tweaking RGB and Gamma is unnecessary for the overwhelming majority of people out there, and I say this as a tech enthusiast.

most broadcasts are 720p so they'd be sharper than 1080

Excuse my ignorance but what exactly is "Pentile"? And is it exclusive to [AM]OLED screens?

Take a look at the zoomed in pictures of the pixels

It's actually not exclusive to AMOLED (even LCD can use this pattern) but so far, only AMOLED screens have used it in flagship phones.

What it boils down to is that the effective resolution is actually lower than the listed resolution. The visual artifacts are fuzzier text edges and the "screendoor" effect in certain flat colours.

Nope. Atrix had one with a LCD screen.

Pentile is the devil. It makes edges on the phone look disgusting at lower (sub-720p) resolutions.

Oh right, I knew it was used in some LCDs but I had forgotten the Atrix had one too. It's a different type from the usual Pentile though.

Even at 720p, you can still tell there's something different when you compare the One X and the GS3. However, the crazy 1080p packed into under 5 inch screens for this current generation is probably beyond the visual acuity of most people.

So definition of Pentile is an uneven distribution/pattern of R-G-B?

Edit: Or when a pixel doesn't comprise of R-G-B, instead sharing an element (R or B or G) with neighboring pixels?

Still unsure the exact meaning of Pentile.

It's when the pixels aren't RGB. There are different variations but they all use subpixel tricks to simulated more actual pixels (with varying degrees of success).

The advantages are lower build cost, lower battery usage and the ability to oversize some of the subpixels to increase the lifespan (blue OLED subpixel).

Basically they aren't full effective pixels. If possible, you want non pentile.

I can certainly see the pentile on a SGS3. I didn't want one for this reason, but its tolerable.

But the Moto Razr's pentile screen was disgusting and gave me headaches. A SGS1 is so bad I would prefer to have a flip phone. Even the Atrix drove me nuts with text.

We will see about the SGS4. I will look at it with a critical eye that has always been able to spot pentile in the past.

Thank you for the helps. I was more interested in its definition, rather than practical implication. So if I am understanding correctly,

1. There are pixels and their grid on a given screen.
2. There are sub-pixels under the pixels.
3. The sub-pixels also draw upon its own grid.
4. If a sub-pixels grid do not comprise of even portion (shape and order as well?) of R[ed]-G[reen]-B[lue], we can call the display "Pentile"
5. Thus, sub-pixels such as RG-RB-RG-RB or RGBW-RGBW are examples of Pentile display.

Correct?

6. How about a sub-pixel pattern of RGB-BGR-RGB-BGR, Pentile or not?
