Also, does the sizes of sub-pixels (relative to each other) have anything to do with "Pentile" as a matter of definition? Which seems to be the case with the S4. (B is bigger than R/G?)

No, different subpixel sizes and arrangement is a different thing than Pentile. The Note 2 for instance has RGB pixels but uses a larger blue.

These usually don't reduce the practical resolution so are not considered a detriment.

I saw that.. but being hopeful the Qualcomm version will garner some support. Seems like its the Exynos version the devs want to avoid.

You people here at androidcentral are morons. Team Hacksung != Cyanogenmod. The S4 has a Qualcomm chipset, Hacksung supports exynos (samsung) chipsets. Who do you think supports the us variant S3's (also qualcomm chipset) ? NOT Team Hacksung. Cyanogen, noobnl, mkasick, and several others including myself. Quit getting your panties in a bundle and spreading idiocy just to get hits. This device should get support.

So basically this time around get a subsidized one if you want CM. But I knew that personally from having the last Exynos Galaxy S phone sold on AT&T.

But the problem is I don't want the Qualcomm version, I want the Exynos version with PowerVR running AOSP flavored ROMS such as CM and AOKP.

This is one of the main reasons I'm not "that" excited about the Galaxy S4 like I was for the Galaxy S2 in the past.
I expected this to happen. I'm used to the broken stuff on Exynos flavored AOSP ROMs which is why I'm waiting for the next Nexus or Motorola's X-Phone.

Only thing drawing me to Samsung is AMOLED along with storage and removable batteries at this point.
Nothing else.

I can certainly see the pentile on a SGS3. I didn't want one for this reason, but its tolerable.

But the Moto Razr's pentile screen was disgusting and gave me headaches. A SGS1 is so bad I would prefer to have a flip phone. Even the Atrix drove me nuts with text.

We will see about the SGS4. I will look at it with a critical eye that has always been able to spot pentile in the past.

I think even minor refinements combined with the higher res would make it barely noticeable. Other than possibly look & feel of the phone, regular smartphone users won't have much to complain about.

my sentiments exactly. but im curious about the working state of CM ROMs and custom kernels for the Qualcomm S3s. How good is it? Surely better than the Exynos versions, but how much better? Nexus good?

Wow really. Every new end-game phone costs more and more every year. Pricing for S5 or something in the next years will be over 1000$ at this rate...

Phone preorders are for those people willing to get gouged. Are you born yesterday?

This is the most thorough preview I've read so far.

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s4-review-910.php

The reviewer seems impressed and so do I. There are gimmicks, but there are also genuine, legitimate efforts to solve the hurdles of human interaction with portable touch screen devices. The countless I/O functions built into this phone, if implemented to perfection, can actually change how we do things. Wish the reviewer had explored a bit further (i.e. performance) but I guess we'll have to wait to learn how well they work.

I can't think of anything else at this time that comes close to the S4 in its technological might. Sorry HTC (nice design but wish it wasn't convex ), Sony (thank you for bringing waterproof to the table), LG (I'm keeping my Nexus 4, though).

Unfortunately the preview doesn't give any hint of battery performance. Oh, and now I am really curious whether Exynos 5 Octa can top this without sacrificing battery performance (which is completely unknown even for Snapdragon version at this time) as well as the potential compatibility with the U.S. carriers.

Was looking into it today.

Seems like the camera for the qualcomm SGS3s are not fully functioning, but everything else is.

So no, not Nexus good. But much better than the pure Exynos versions.

Yet off center sharpness is miles ahead of the Sony Z's.

What? I'm on a AOSP 4.2.2 Rom and my Camera works fine. There are almost no actual bugs in GS3 w/ Qualcomm roms that aren't in AOSP.

It's less than S4 Pro and reviewers don't seem to think the HTC One has poor battery life.

Nothing can ever be as good as the Nexus.
