Am I wasting my 8800GT?

There needs to be a database of what the top level of graphic card is for what processors.

I just replaced my beloved 6800GT with a BFG 8800GT scored from Best Buy. (Never thought Best Buy would be my go-to source for a major component, ) Obviously with the FX-60 (that replaced a 4000+ in Jan) my system is as upgraded as its going to get without a mb swap. It is what its going to be. But for my piece of mind, how much is the FX-60 bottlenecking the 8800GT?

Welcome to the forums!

I'm using my 8800GT with a socket 939 X2 4400+ oc'd to 2.75ghz but I'm also running it at 1920x1200. Who cares and enjoy it!!!

Since you already have 2 gigs of ram and a dual core, you are fine. It wont' be as fast for minimum frames as the top core 2 duo processors, but then just crank 4AA/16AF at high resolutions and the cpu limitation will become less important. You can always overclock your processor slightly.

See, that's the thing. I definitely am enjoying it, the FX-60 had room for upgrade beyond the 6800GT. And like I said, there is no point in upgrading the card beyond the 8800GT without a mb change so my system is what it's going to be until its completely replaced by a new build. But that obsessive little nagging part of my brain just has to know.

Modern games stress the video card much more than the cpu, so you're not wasting the 8800gt.

You'll be thrilled by the increase you'll get. I went from a 7900GS to an 8800GTS and i doubled my frame rates. You should see almost triple.

Almost forgot to say hey to a fellow michigander like me

That's still a very good system, I wouldn't worry about it till you're ready to upgrade to a Quad-Core.

Enjoy your 8800GT

Exactly what conlan said. Just enjoy your 8800GT and play games cranked up with high detail.

You shouldn't encounter much of a bottleneck with your FX-60. What resolution are you gaming at? The higher the rez, the lesser of a bottleneck your FX becomes.

I'm running a pair of 7900gs and getting a 3dmark of 7200. Will hitting ~12000 on a single 8800gt be real noticeable? Normal game rez is 1920*1200.

Like the other guy says, you will see a much lower minimum framerate because there are times when physics will become a bottleneck, but if its just shaders, lighting and effects, then your average fps will be pretty similar to a top end system.

I think you are fine. I probably would not upgrade that chip.

Excellent. Thanks for the welcomes and the info. geokilla, 1680x1050, Samsung 225bw, great lcd.

Knowing that the socket 939 meant that there was a ceiling to the video card upgrade path, I have been looking for a 512mb or more video card to "finish" my system for several months, but none of the available cards really passed the bang/buck ratio test. The 8600GTS's had a good price, but un-thrilling performance, and the 8800GTX's were too, well, I mean, cripes, just look at that price... After reading the initial reviews of the 8800GT's, I knew I had found the card I was looking for, (if I could actually physically find it...) but was worried that the shine of the reviews was blinding me to the reality of my cpu. This makes me feel better, now I can relax and enjoy the zen of having a system that is finished.

Hmm, but now that I think about it, I did pay the premium for XMS memory with those nice heat spreaders and a mb with a lot of customization options in the bios... and I did spend a lot of time routing cable and modding the case for maximum airflow...

That was my concern, I can't upgrade the chip. The socket 939 topped out with the FX-60. So if I want more of a CPU, I need a new mb. For me, that will be a new system.

there isn't much room to upgrade on the AMD side right now... Even with an AM2 mobo...

Your only real CPU upgrade is a c2d/q, and your cpu is plenty fast.
