Amazon.com Wireless Reviews: Verizon

So with Amazon offering essentially free E815 or VX8100 phones, i'm tempted to switch my current (fairly poor) T-mobile service to Verizon. All the B&M stores warn against going with Amazon because if I have trouble with the phone or with the service, I have to deal with Amazon and their resellers, instead of the local stores. Does anyone have experience with Amazon Wireless, Verizon in particular?

I would be interested in porting my old number, and Amazon told me I would need to get the phone, then call VZW and talk to them about porting the number, but in the store they just rolled their eyes and said they didn't know.

Any experiences, comments, horror stories?

I don't know if this is a similar situation or not, but I have VZW and went through the phone (called VZW) to buy instead of a B&M because they give poor service (I waited 4 different times for 30-45 minutes and never even talked to someone). But I called VZW up on the phone and worked with them. Anytime something goes wrong I have to call instead of go into the physical store, but I get my problem solved faster over the phone than talking to an actual person.

I've bought my last two phones off Amazon... one on ATT and the next on T-Mobile (this one involved porting my number from ATT).

There are absolutely no probs with amazon. In the immediate family, my sis and I have been happy Amazon cellphone customers for over three years; and I know many other people who've bought from amazon and enjoyed their low prices. As for porting my number, I did have to call T-Mobile once I got the cell. I don't think the people at the local stores are gonna help you with porting your number.

As for problems: last year, my sis got a phone (Nokia/T-Mobile) and within a month, a friend physically damaged the phone beyond use. She had to pay for shipping the phone, but she got a new piece in 4 days. Now this wasn't really a big problem for her coz she had a old GSM phone to use as a backup. I don't know if your local store would replace your phone on the spot (which may partially explain their ridiculously high prices).

Take whatever you hear from your local store with a grain of salt. They make a LOT of money per customer from what I hear.
