I ordered two things from Amazon that should've been here by Xmas. Neither made it in time.

One I ordered on Dec 11th. It came the 27th. They claimed there was a bad snowstorm, etc. Ok, maybe that's acceptable.

The other one however, was not acceptable. I ordered on Dec 22nd, then payed 12 dollars in shipping for their garunteed to be delivered by Dec 24th option. It also came the 27th. When I pay TWELVE dollars for shipping that's GARUNTEED to be here by a certain date, I don't care if they have to drive it down here themselves, it had better be there on said date.

Going through amazon it self, they are okay and usually are good. I buy there sometimes. But going through there new & used section..ie not amazon it self..it sometimes takes awhile since they people are like ebay sometimes. So they are slow if they aren't a big company and they are a little mom & pop small business operation or individual.

I love Amazon overall, but I do have 2 real complaints about them:

1) The time between me placing an order and Amazon shipping it has gotten to be unpredictable and fairly long in many cases. You don't know if your order is in stock, and whether it's likely to ship in a couple of days (they NEVER ship on the day following my order lately) or 7 days, or longer.

2) When listing items in a category, they don't do a very good job at letting you see which ones are in stock, and/or sold by Amazon. Many times I will have to try to sort through dozens of discontinued items which are mixed in with the current stock. This one drives me nuts.

Re: Amazon shipping. Yes amazon's shipping is unpredictable, but that's what you get for selecting the free 5-9 day shipping. If you order CD/DVDs, they use USPS, which means if you live near a distribution center, you can get it in a day or two. I ordered a load of soft porn from them on a Friday, selected free shipping, they shipped it out on Monday morning, I got it in the afternoon. DAMN.

Baked, you sound like your mom works for Amazon You confuse "ships in 24h" and "will be delivered in 24h". The first depends on Amazon and them alone, so I think the first complaint you posted has some merit. If it says "ships in 24" and hasn't shipped in 5 days, what does it have to do with where one lives? Sure, when you have millions of customers, you're bound to have idiots that leave negative ratings at the drop of a hat. But the fact is that as Amazon has grown, their customer service went down the tubes, their prices are far from competitive, and generally they are just an average online store, like eCost or buy.com.

I've got some anectodal stuff to add.

Ordered some books this morning. Selected the free shipping option. Left the screen up and timed out. Went back and placed the order. Forgot to change the shipping back to free. Got billed for the $6 shipping. Called the 800#. Five minutes later, the $6 is credited back. Try calling them. They are extremely easy to work with.

They are OK except for their shipping. They used to ship everything by UPS, which is never a good solution for me. The last order I had with them was a split shipping arrangement: Airborne picked it up from Amazon and brought it to my town, then handed it off to the post office, who then misdelivered it. There is no tracking after the handoff. Amazon's customer service is not very good, either: they have apparently farmed it out to call center drones.

I buy from amazon because I occasionally find great deals there on a variety of products, they often offer free shipping and there is no tax on orders placed from California. I have always gotten exactly what I ordered and when somethnig ships for free I'm happy that it gets to me.

When I need things right away I go to the store and buy them, when I want low prices I come to this hotdeals forum and deal with all the issues that come up when buying online. I stopped Christmas Bargain Hunting about a week and a half before Christmas, and just bit the bullet and bought in store for those last few gifts.

If you need something on Dec. 24th, no online vendor can absolutely guarantee that it will be there when you order it on the 22nd. Even if you give them $12. Yea, they shouldn't say that they can, but I think that there are a lot of sites that make that promise and can't come through on it in 100% of the cases. Boycotting Amazon because they were the vendor you ordered from and weren't able to deliver in this one instance wouldn't make much sense to me and I think I would still order from them if they had the lowest price on something I wanted and the time constraints were more reasonable. If Amazon gives you your $12 back or agrees to accept a return at no cost on your product I would consider that reasonable.

Just imho, and I would still be happy to order from Amazon.

Or if you live alone and have nobody home in the daytime. Your choices include having the package sit in the front yard unattended or trying to get to the UPS depot against rush hour traffic and your work schedule.

To put it another way, 90% of my Christmas shopping dollars (and that ain't chump change) have gone to Amazon.com three years running. As far as I'm concerned, they never fail. They will get a poor rating at a place like RR because people don't bother to post positive news about consistent good performers on RR. People post about a place like Amazon when they need to b*tch. I've had over 30 orders through Amazon, never had a single problem, but haven't posted a peep on RR. But when Directron screwed me...
