Is there a rule that every budget CPU must end in 'ron'?

Well, except Opteron.

You consider a Athlon FX Budget? more power to ya.

The whole point of naming is to use letters and syllables that are recognizable and carry a positive connotation for the potential buyer.

EX: Athlon ~ Athlete
Or Duron ~Durable or ~For duty
Or suffix "on" ~ marathon

WTF does this have? ~Semiporn or a brand of motor oil is all I get out of it. Both negative, both crap.

No.

Maybe they are trying to appeal to marines, "Semper Fi" and such .

Still, I'd rather have a Simp than a vegetable (eg, celery-on)

What was wrong with Duron? It was a great name. I'm sure poor sales had something to do with AMD's decison to drop the name. But the nimrods they are, could'nt fiqure out these poor sales were not due to nomenclature per se, but rather the fact that the XP's were priced at about the same level cutting into thier Duron sales.

It just glides right into the socket so smoothly...

I don't think it's much different from "Athlon" or "Duron". I wouldn't have expected any different from AMD; marketing is not their specialty.

If I was their marketing chief, I would name it "AMD PWNS intel" or "intelligent". Maybe if they spoof the intel name people will recognize them better.

So what is this "Sempron" anyways? Is it a rebranded XP or A64, or is it a competely new architecture? Why are we discussing the name as opposed to what the thing really is?

<EDIT: Because AMD won't tell us what it is. What's the point in announcing a product if you won't even tell the world WTF you're trying to sell?>

Aaaaack What kind of name is that?! When I hear "Sempron," the first thing that comes to mind is, umm, that one aisle at the supermarket that I never go near :Q

I liked "Sledgehammer," you can't ask for a better processor name than that... if you speak English, that is. Unfortunately, they need a name that isn't tied to one language :frown:

Yes, it's too bad "Sledgehammer" isn't the real name of the CPU though; it was a secret codename. Much better than Athlon64 though. :beer:

Sempron is the Socket 754 AXP we've been hearing about for months now. Nothing new here except a crappy product name.

All the names of these CPUs seem to be devrived from Latin...

Celeron...======> Celer [swift, quick, rapid].... (the early celeron 300A was fast, very fast)
Duron ....======>"durabilis"[lasting, durable]
Sempron...======>semper[always]
Opteron....=====> optimas [one of the best]
Athlon......=====> athleta [athlete]
