I'm considering a build with an I5-750. Can someone tell me what the AMD cpu that would be similar? I'm not looking at it from which is better based on OC capabilities, etc, but just out of the box.

Off hand I'd say the Phenom II x4 965 BE is about on par with specs and price but I could be wrong.

Hard to go wrong with either, both are pretty darned good. AMD mobos are probably the better buy though in the sub-$100 range.

Yep. The Intel CPUs are really in a class above almost everything AMD has, but the Motherboards are much more value priced for the quality ones on the AMD side.

The motherboards do seem to be a lot cheaper on the AMD side. The AM3 socket seems to offer more flexibility upgrading chips vs. the 1156 1356 sockets of intel

If you get lucky with a 750 you may get above 4.0 with select few getting 4.2 ish. 3.8 reliably is about what you can expect on the high end on the 965 or any of the amd phenom 2 quads. There is a well known issue with the phenom 2s that x64 os's just dont oc as well. I have both a 955 and a 750 and while they are both about the same the 955 was dirt easy to oc.

Out of the box, I'd go with the 750. It runs cooler/uses less power and is faster (turbo mode is great for stock users). If you are overclocking, I'd still go with the 750. The method is a little different, but it's pretty easy to overclock still. Mine's sitting at 4.0GHz at only 1.35625V. It's not that high of a cost either - ~$180-200 for the chip, and ~$100-120 for the motherboard.

The new C3 stepping ended that and it seems people are able to squeeze some 100-200MHz putting it 4-4.1 GHz range.

Ya really at that price range either option is perfectly fine. I decided to go the i5 route because well at the time it was new, and seeing as it was the first gaming PC that I actually built from scratch I figured I'd go all out and grab the newest stuff. So far I'm quite happy with the i5 .. but now that I hear that the bulldozer may use the am3 motherboards I'm abit unhappy with my decision. I hope Intel has plans to drop a future processor into the 1156 architecture (for upgradeable purposes). That fact coupled with the P55 socket problems has me more than slightly concerned.

I'd go with the AMD solution for the time being until Foxconn solves the socket issue or grab a 1156 board with a tycos socket. (Hopefully I won't be buying yet another new system in the near future due to this socket issue) But like I said performance wise the i5 and 965 are about equal it's more about personal preference at this point.

This is a hard question...
:\

The new C3 steppings on PH make overclocking easier.
But the i5's are also easy ocers..

yeah.. which is why i said its a hard question...

OP, id go for either or, honestly.
The two cpu's your asking us to pit is very difficult.
I guess it would ultimately be down to what program do you want to be faster in?

In benchmarks like superPI the intel would be faster, in games and other sort, i think the AMD might pull a little ahead.

Intel's P55 has new features if you can get them, AM3 should be rolling out with them in time.

So your walking on a line straight down the middle.

i5 is a league ahead of any phenom. Even at stock clocks it pulls ahead in CPU intensive tasks (BTW, i own the phenom). If you can afford it spring for the 860 with hyper threading, if you only intend to game then get a 955 or 965 instead and a cheap full featured motherboard.

Out of the box, the 2.66 GHz i5 is faster than anything from AMD, including the 3.4 GHz 965.

This doesn't mean the Ph-II is a bad CPU - but with both CPUs selling for about $199, I'd find it hard to justify going with the Phenom II. The mobos may be $30 cheaper, but for most people, $30 isn't a lot of money, especially when you consider that you'll spend many hours in front of the computer and use it for years to come.

The 955 seems to be selling for about $175 now. I would pick that over a non-C3 965 any day (and did). But the C3 965 is the one to get if you decide to go with AMD. It overclocks better, runs cooler and draws less power than the previous 965.
