AMD is Future Proof!!!!!!!!!

Based on what I've red, future Am3 CPU's can run using AM2 Mobo's....
So this means, that those looking for an upgrade now and hoping for upgrade again next year can buy AM2 CPU & mobo now and upgrade AM3 Cpu next year....

But if conroe wins the performance now against he current AM2 Athlons...Is it justifiable that when you ugrade to AM3(hopefully a Quad Core) while keeping your AM2 mobo, the performance will be greater than Intel's offering???

Or when you compete against Intel's Quad Core next year, you should buy a new AM3 CPU & Mobo.....

Because I'm pretty sure that when Intel launces its Quad Core, it will come with a new Mobo...So how can you beat the new Intel Quad Core (new mobo & ddr3) using an AM3 CPU but paired with an old AM2 mobo with dd2????

Any help.............
Suggestions.........

The current ES revs of Kentfield are working fine on current Core 2 boards.

We have no idea how the K8L is going to perform, it looks promising on paper but actuall performance is yet to be seen.
Also, you've got about a year wait before K8L hits the market fully, and again, we dont know if it'l be enough to pass the core 2 duo.

I'm skeptical...remember incompatiblities within Socket A boards themselves? It's a rule of thumb to upgrade MB and CPU's at the same time if the tech is considerably different.

I don't think much of the K8L. When they try to push Quad Core like it's the future and in reality it's nothing it makes me worry about how much they put into the single threaded performance which the K8 is severely lacking.

What? K8 had the best single-threaded performance for a long time. All the way up until Core 2. I don't see how that can be considered "lacking". It was best in class when it debuted, and held on to that title for a respectable length of time.

Agree completely...in fact, I remember using these exact words about Core 2 Duo! It is great on paper, but let's wait and see how it actually performs.

It only appears that way. K8 lacking single thread performance that is. Before Core 2 Duo showed up, K8 was incredible. Now suddenly it's lacking? Not by a long shot.

I agree with Some1ne on this...the K8 had one of the longest runs in single threaded superiority I can remember in the last 8 years. And Quad Core is only a small part of K8L,

Agreed, especially since AM3's are supposed to be able to run DDR3. That means that continuing to use DDR2 with an AM3 will severely hamper it's performance.

That's possible, but not necessarily true...for example, changing to DDR2 didn't really improve performance.

Is it safe to assume that amd might clock the k8l high enough, sell the chips at a loss due to low yields just so it can beat intel? You'd think they'd want their crown back no?

ROFL at the title. NOTHING is future proof.

I'm thinking of a bit of nostalgia vis-a-vi Dothan...

Single threaded performance is not directly relative to the competition but is directly relative to the software development and overall demand of the market. Which includes but not limited too; 2400x1200 resolution LCD screens playing Quake Wars and encoding 10 GIG HD-DVD movies. It is indirectly relevant that in this case Intel highlighted some of the K8s areas that need to be improved.

I make it sound like im casting doubts on AMD which I did not mean to do. I'm actually highly optimistic of their pipeline. I'm stating that even what they have so far released on paper means nothing unless their core can execute the technology for what it's fully worth.
