I know AMD processors run hotter than Intel's but, dang! My friends got a 1GHz T-Bird that isn't overclocked on an Asus A7V board. He seems to have plenty of fans but the CPU is reportedly running at around 115-120 degrees farenheit. Isn't that a bit warm and what could be causing the high temps?

My duron 600 @ 1000 runs at 102 when idel an like 115 or something when underload, his temps seem fine.

ninajazed,
115-120 degrees farenheit is not anything to worry about. Athlons run hotter than Intel cpus. If you start getting in the 50 celsius range then you might start thinking about better cooling. Any thing above 60c is a definite problem.

So sorry. His machine idles at 51C but tops at 61C or around 140 farenheit. That is too F***ing hot, isn't it? He's got a stock cooler on it. What gives here?

My 1 GHz Athlon idles at 50°C and maxes at around 62°C.

Mostly because I'm using a QuietPC fan. I'm going to add a Panaflo or Pabst chassis fan right next to it to help it cool better.

Just be careful with incorrect CPU temperature reading. Athlon 1 GHz are rated up to 90°C, but I wouldn't risk it to go any higher than 70°C.

Time to use the extra CPU heat for something cool...like making a still or something

Yeah, that's completely fine. I used one of those quiet PC fans on my 1ghz Athlon, and the temp was consistenetly 130F. It was silent though... great for someone who doesn't overclock. I started to however, and changed fans. Anybody want to buy a quiet PC HSF?

Ummm, hey Geo,
No offense but anybody can post a spec sheet of their "dream" computer. I always thought the rig profile page was for what you actually are running. It should be most impressive once (if) it sees the light of day. Good luck wit dat!

Well, I have 90% done, just need the MB, CPU, and RAM, but it's pretty much decided. If I don't have a "rig", then what is this black box sitting right next to my current computer? I didn't know there was criteria for posting on the rig page. Figured at the veyr least, if someone was thinking of buying something that I already owned (like my case), they could ask me about it, or if someone had and opinion/comment on my rig so far, they could comment.

Just built an T-Bird 1.2 Ghz on an A7V133 M/B - Using a GlobalWin FOP 38 (Noisy Mutha)but Asus Probe monitor reports CPU temp at 57 deg C (134 F). Seems way too high. Using a Lian Li Aluminium case with 3 case fans but makes no diff. even with case cover off. Also running another cooler over my PCI cards (Garnet Satelite card gets hot).

Thinking of buying a fridge to put the case in!! Any advice that will save me the cost of the fridge would be appreciated.

first, thanks for all the info above. especially about the max temp rating on the athlon. good to know.

ok, so i just finished building an athlon 750 system with a kt7a-raid mobo. and "pc150" ram. ok, so it won't even post over 850. is this a little weak? my processor is reaching temps of 54C (with the case open), which according to the above info is ok, but still worries me. i have a fop32-1 on it. how much thermal past should i have on there? is it possible that i have too much? not enough? or is there some other issue i'm not catching on to here?

are you annoyed by my 15 gazillion questions yet? =o)

Well, first off, in most instances, the case being open hurts temperature and airflow. The case is designed to conduct airflow, and by leaving it open, the fans are blowing some of that air into the open. Second, what are you using as a conductor between the HSF and CPU? Right now I've got a 1ghz ahlon with a stock Foxconn and the temp stays at around 105F with a heavy load. I'm using artic sliver I. I'll let you know what happens when I finish my current PC. Between the Lian-Li PC-12, an alpha HSF, and the artic silver, I would expect my next system to be very cool. I have a delta fan and a sanyo denki fan, and if the temp difference is not too much, I'll stay witht he sanyo because it is so quiet.

Geocross, your future system specs are almost going to be like mine are today. Late March seems like an eternity from now. hehe

Tell me about it Adam I've been waiting for the Iwill KA-266 1.4 (it's coming) or any of the KT266, and I think I'm going to jump to the first that comes out. You got a pretty nice system over there, maybe our systems can get together one day and play BTW, where did you get the PC2100? I talked to a sales rep at Crucial, and they said they'd have it by mid-march, and mushkin is just so expensive right now. I'm going to have to get 256Mb, though, cause I dislike running Win2k on just 128MB.
