Crap.....I didn't win the free core lottery today. Took delivery of a 720 chip and it is not a 0904 chip....not extra cores for me.

We don't know if the potential is unlock the 4th core is exclusive to 0904... give it a shot!

Edit: over at XS, someone got 0849 to work.

Neither of those record temps any differently than AOD (AMD Overdrive).

I just can't believe that, at 100% load, the X3 710 running 4 cores, OC'd to 3 ghz, +.087v, my CPU would have temps at 47C with the stock cooler.

Just started OCCT.

Well if you are near Microcenter I hear they let you pick your cpu

Now at 3.2 Ghz...

After 10 minutes OCCT, Everest reporting CPU temp of 60C. I opened a window about 6' away from the PC. Outdoor temp is 45F.

VCore +.1v

Very cool. It's been awhile since any piece of hardware was truly unlockable. Last ones I can remember were the 6800NUs.

Yeah, I was thinking at those 6800's, too. I had one.

Gotta give some credit to AMD's stock cooler. Heck, I'm even using the stop thermal paste. It does a decent job cooling, and isn't super-loud. My PC's case has a 25cm intake fan on the side, and the only exhaust is the 120mm fan in the PSU, which happens to get pretty loud.

AMD's new stock cooler is hella good.

Try searching online and around AMD's website and see if they use the core temperatures or the motherboard (Tcase) temperature to figure out their max temps. I know the AMD X2 lineup uses the Tcase to determine max temp.

The discussion about the whole matter @ Tom's is pretty funny.

Lemme guess ...

TC is going off on the AMD unCrippled-Triple Phenom II x3 720 ??

Well, there's one Korean person whose English is poor [but better than my Korean ] and rambles and calls everybody "dudu", and another person who keeps insisting - in the face of mounting evidence to the contrary - that this is all either a hoax, or the activated core is too unstable to be useful. He's really insistent, and is going to wind up with a lot of egg on his face. And, of course, all the other little "forum-arguments".

I hardly ever check out Tom's, but this is fun... pass the popcorn!

So there's just one confirmed batch that can be unlocked? If there are no others and this is a one shot deal, then this is a neat fluke for those who got lucky. There's no reason why prices on these would get inflated and people would make money reselling because there's an upper limit to how high the price will go because you'll approach x4 prices.

But, see, you're being rational. There are people who will pay extra $$ to have something they perceive as "special".

I was thinking about selling mine for $300 (lol)... "mint!", "unlocks to X4!", "a collector's item!"

Sorry to hi-jack this thread, but I have a quick question. I have the same MOBO and Advanced Clock Calibration is nowhere to be found. I have an Athlon X2 BE-2400 in there now. Is this feature only available to Phenoms?

are you talking about werxen? Any ways with Realtemp at 4GHz it reports my CPU temps at 60c full load. I guse with 45nm you have to configer the system. Maybe you should pop your head up and tell them your story on this chip at tom's. I want to see that werxen's replies.

Yeah, werxen, you got it.

Sadly, Realtemp only supports Intel. Nice to get get 4 ghz outta q9650 you have!

Someone can always point "werxen" to this thread... I'm sure I'll have plenty of company in the X3 --> X4 club, soon.

Anyone know someone who did this with a non-0904 chip? Or is it confirmed for sure that it's only for those chips.

Over at XtremeSystems, someone claims to have gotten an 0849 to work.

hey try the AOD stablity tester to see if that picks up any thing as well. Also what dose the BIOS say your temps are compared to AOD in Idle?

Not only did I NOT win the 0904 batch lottery, I can't even boot my system with this processor installed. I have a Gigabyte GA-MA790FX DS-5, it is AM3 ready but will not post with the X3 installed. I have the latest bios and all. Maybe my RMA will be the unlockable batch.

I read a forum post - I think it was at XS - that some guy's PC wouldn't boot at all with X3 720 and ACC set to auto. That could be a problem.

AOD stability was fine. Upon startup, BIOS usually reports temps around 33C. AOD reports idle temps as 9C. :frown:
