the power consumption numbers of anandtech look fucked up.

a 4850 consumes almost the same power at idles and loads as 4870?

you should buy one and try it. let us know if it works . of course, 4850 has been available off and on for $139 AR shipped for a while now, so it's probably not worth the hassle to get 4830. of course, if 4850 creeps up closer to $150-160 then 4830 will be a more viable option imho.

Yeah, I don't really agree with some of the review conclusions I've seen so far, as far as filling a gap in the 4 series line-up.

Priced too close to the AR price of a 4850 right now. The way I see it, you'd either spend a tiny bit more for a 4850, or spend a bit less for a 9800GT + game bundle. That is...unless some company decides to offer a nice bundled item with their 4830, which would tip the scales a bit...

This might be a dumb question (and I admittedly haven't been following the midrange market) -- but how is the 9600GT beating the 9800GT so solidly on page 6 of the TechReport review?

It shouldn't be. Not whatsoever. May be error. I think they may have mislabled and mixed up the 9800GT with the 9600GT in that test. So, swap the labels for the 9600GT and 9800GT and that would seem more in line.

It appears to be an error with the review samples. AT's card was one of the bad ones.

it doesn't make sense that they would do a hardware cut down to 640 sp's and then write a bios for only 560...

maybe all 4830 needs is another bios update to unlock the SP and texture units.

maybe the cutdown is only done in bios? is it possible you could unlock another SIMD unit if your card only has one bad one? in theory the reason they are using these chips is because they are bad yields off of their HD4850/70 chips, and they have been saving them up until now. hell, it is possible that these chips have 8 good SIMD units, they just wouldnt clock high enough to be shipped as 4850s. wonder what would happen if someone tried hacking the bios to see if they can unlock the cards SIMD units up, would be interested in seeing the results. there might be issues on the later model cards (refrence) that arent seated on the 4850 boards though lol
