On another note, for all the Ryzen memory tweakers out there, what is generally considered better for Zen 3 (talking about the rig in sig with 5950X, 4x8GB Gskill B die, and X570 Meg Ace): DDR4 3200 C14, or 3600 C16?

I have been thinking of tweaking my memory a bit more. Currently just running at the DDR4 3200 XMP, but I have had the RAM as high as 3800 MT/s before. Thoughts on a sweet spot? Note that this 5950X doesn't seem to like 1900 FCLK, though some of my other Ryzens ran it fine.

I did not write system info as new CPU I bought works fine, and each my system is different that one:
corsair tx650, gigabyte b550m ds3h, 16GB kingston 4000Mhz, latest bios stock settings, no GPU, linux 22.04 only SSH access
ID 214-xt cooler

also that was used with 4750G so plain swap to 5900x produced WHEA errors and then new 5900x from other seller was swapped in next 48h and works fine for last 2 days even with PBO -20 now

Highest MT/s you can get for the 5950X. It is pretty bandwidth starved in MT workloads. But if you are mostly using it for gaming, then lowest CL is more preferable.
he can drop to cas latency 14 and shave off 1 whole ns for a small price jump and push that ram higher and see how it perform.

Yeah it's at 3200 C14 right now, I suppose I just raise frequency in small increments and see how it goes.

The 5800X3D has completely resolved the little hiccups I was having in some CPU heavy games. You'd think a 5800X boosting past 5GHz would be enough for Spiderman Miles Morales, but nope. The 3D is a noticeable improvement. I'd get some minor frame pacing issues with RT on, silky smooth now.

I also just picked up Miles recently and it runs great on my system same cpu and I have RT on and getting good fps.

So I am thinking, of possibly trading my 5950X for a 5800X3D. But I am not sure if this would really be more of a side grade. I don't do much CPU intense compute, mostly game. But sometimes I do run benchmarks, such as 3DMark, as well as do video recording during gameplay and such. Main games I play recently include New World, COD MWII, Quake Champions, SWTOR, HLL, and BF2042.

I play at 2560x1440, and I try to aim for high FPS up to around 270, or at least 200 if possible. I don't use RT. Specs in sig. I guess the question is, with these games and possibly others in mind, does the 5800X3D extra cache generally outweigh the extra cores of the 5950X, given my use case and other hardware.

I don't know how the 5950x and 3D compare in the games mentioned. However, for gaming in general the 3D is a much better. In the Gamers Nexus latest test suite it's faster in every title. Sometimes by a remarkably big margin.

Of note: GN has seriously picked it up on their game content. Steve responded in the comments to the City Skylines youtuber City Planner Plays thanking him for the game save since their biz model isn't conducive to sinking all that time into learning and playing. The end result is outstanding; we finally get to see a sim in a major review with heavy hardware loads. They have picked it up in other ways too. Stoked to see it, and it adds weight to their evaluations.

I had picked up a DeepCool 240mm AIO for $40 a couple years back. Keeps my 3D quiet, boosts to 4.5GHz or so. Best CPU I've ever owned.

Yeah, I went from a 5800x to a 5900x which is the CPU I "always" wanted which did basically nothing for me, then the moved the 5800x 3D. In general CPU tasks, yeah, it's measurably slower.

But in game play it really smooths out the minimum FPS in a remarkable fashion. If you have your PC to game, mainly, its by far the best CPU for the socket imo. No question.

You should disable one CCD on your 5950X and try recording video during gameplay. See how it does. Assuming you're doing CPU encoding. If you're doing dGPU encoding then nevermind.
Yeah lately I have been using Radeon Relive with AV1. OBS seems to have issues capturing certain games for whatever reasons.

Anyway, I went ahead and started a FS/T thread, looks like the 5800X3D is a better choice for me.

There are a couple of new AAA titles that really need a Zen4 CPU to get framerates up. Some games have pretty large boosts in framerate, others don't benefit much. I guess you'd have to do research on the game you are or want to play to really see if it's worth it. OTOH, depending on how that trade/sale goes, it may not cost you anything to buy the 5800X3D.

FWIW. Kind of annoyed with myself for upgrading to Zen3 instead of waiting till Zen5 came out and doing a new build. Now I have to wait, according to my standard budgetary agreement with my wife, till at least 2025-2026 for a new build. Stupid me.

Which ones? the 3D is faster than the 7700 in some 2023 games. Hogwarts maxed out ray tracing is the only one I have seen where the 3D doesn't hold 60fps with a 4090. Even then it is right behind the 7700 at 4K. With that pimptastic Sapphire Nitro+ 7900XTX and less or no RT, plus the lower driver overhead, it should be golden.

The 3D does really well vs the 7700 here - HUBs 7800X3D v 13700K -

It is also drop in upgrade vs whole new cpu, mobo, ram, and fresh windows and apps install. Not even in the realm of a good value upgrade. The futureproofing has value, but with how his upgrade will not cost him anything OOP when done, not so much in this instance. At least from my POV.

I would wait for the BF through Cyber Monday deals if the 5950x sells outright. I paid EDIT: checked the invoice $277.70 for my 5800X3D from Amazon, the deals should get that hot again.

- I went from a 6600K + 980ti system to a 5800x3d and 6800xt system.

Nothing quite like contrast therapy to make you feel good about spending $1200 on a gaming rig.

I couldn't get my 3930k to completely jump DDR4, Borderlands 3 saw to that. Even with a shiny pre-mining/pandemic RX 5700 xt it would stumble.

But, if I could do it again I would have still done my initial jump to the 3600x then skipped the 5800 and 5900 and just gone straight to the 5800x 3D.

The 3600/5700xt/B450 setup was a solid pairing and offered a big jump that I made at just the right time it seemed it retrospect. That was great contrast therapy as you say.... if I am being completely honest I probably should still be using that rig.
