So I'm a little crazy. I have a 5950x, and wife was already using a 5800x. I saw a deal for a 5900x though and nabbed it. So going to swap that into the wife's pc. No idea what to do with the 5800x right now. I still have a 3950x and a 1700x to do something with as well.

Trade or sell?

Get a mini ITX board and a sweet arse GT 1030, set PPT to 80W and have the small n fast 8c/16t Excel / Dwarf Fortress beast

prime95 crashed with that temp limit, put everything back to default and am just testing Cores 0, 2, 4 and 6 smallFFT to see if I have something else unstable.

Ok, default CPU settings, with Cores 0, 2, 4 and 6 smallFFT showed a wattage usage of ~87 with temp getting close the the 90 C limit, was like 80 something.

Gimped to 4.4ghz static OC @ 1.13V. AMD marketing department shoves 1.5V to achieve 4.75Ghz freq @ 110W with 4C load. Average effective clock = 4C 100% load, 12C 0% load results in ~1.1Ghz average.

I am now running a PPT of 80W with Cores 0, 2, 4 and 6 prime95 smallFFT, and, this looks to be close to what @JoeRambo achieved with the static settings mentioned previously.

Yes, my MHz lower than the 4.4...

I do have HT on though, I am debating turning it off and doing the same test, maybe tomorrow, am tired of restarting the PC, lol.

The most important take away? Limiting the CPU using PPT is the easiest way for most people to lower the temps and voltage used by these chips, else, look for an OEM pre-built with a non X chip in it? Or use ECO mode?

80W and 4.05Ghz clocks tho. And if load rises, your CPU will drop clocks more and more. Not much use of this "eco" mode for wide range of loads.

Manual undervolt and underclock ( that becomes overclock at X cores loaded versus stock ) is still the way to go if You don't mind loosing some ST performance.

prime95 smallFFT is the worst case work load for a CPU.

Running CB R23 right now with 4T, not pinned to any fixed core, the 4 threads are boosting to 4.5 and the chip is ~60 C.

The way these chips are designed around thermal limits, setting a fixed clock and voltage seems very 1999...

Still 80W, and voltage is going ballistic. It just won't work economically this way, marketing department configured them to use up to 1.5V as long as total amperage is OK and TDP is followed, as more cores are loaded, frequency will drop to keep amps and watts and celciuses in check.

LOL, really? You are seriously worried about volts?

This is all core load on CB R23, voltage and temps look pretty darn good.

Core VID's are pretty close to a majority of cores (0.950V) for Det0x's tuned up 5950X

lol....Ignoring the CBr23 I guess. I'd have to assume that you wouldn't gimp your cpu that much in your real world uses.

Have you tried the free version of CTR 2.1 RC5 yet? Hybrid overclock is enabled so you can probably get the best of both worlds while saving some watts and lowering temps.

I don't use Ryzen Master anymore to play around with clocks. CTR looks to be the best option for me at least.

I haven't done the CBr23 Hybrid OC run yet.

I admit I am in easy button mode right now; my reasoning for 80W PPT is thus; at default CPU settings, 4C prime95 smallFFT was using ~87W and 80 ish C temp.

So, set my PPT to 80W and see how it does; right now, I am tired of restarting, BIOS fiddling and testing, as the 5900X is in my primary PC.

I will play the the 5800X more at some point also as it is in a separate PC.

I do want to try CTR, was avoiding the ver 1 releases, 2.x looks good.

What are you using to cool your 5900x?

I prefer not to fiddle around in the uEFI other then setting up the basic stuff and memory clocks/timings. Opening up CRT and clicking enable profile if I want to save power and lower temps is the easiest solution.

The latest CTR is the best one I've found. The other ones picked questionable OC's that sometimes weren't even stable in the end. It doesn't take much time for it to do it's thing and give you suggested profiles to test. You still have the option of dropping the clocks and voltages in the profiles anyways.

Here's the CBr23 run I just did. The Hybrid OC works good and one has the option of changing the profile if a higher single core clock is desired.

I'll probably dial back the P1 profile some more in the end. I still have to test and see what effect it has on gaming at 1440p. I'm sure my Time Spy score will drop due to gimping the cpu, but as long as the fps don't drop it shouldn't matter in the end.

Right now a Scythe Grand Kama Cross 3, I just got some brackets to try the Mugen 2 Rev B on it.

Those are good results, what do your temps look like using CTR?

During the CBr23 multi-core it peaked around 67c. The single core fluctuated between 68-70c. I'm cooling my 5900x with a Corsair iCUE H150i Elite Capellix in push/pull.

I still have to bench some games, but I'm thinking I can manipulate the P1 profile lower without sacrificing too much multi-core performance in the end.

Nice, I had a 140mm push pull on the 4790K, but went back to air for Zen2. The case is a Cooler Master Storm Sniper, it is not really setup for 280mm AIO, it has 3 200mm fans in, so, I am all in on air right now.

Picked up a 5600X and B550 Aorus Elite for a PC gaming friend last week, upgrade from an i5 7500. Vid card is a 1060 and a 60Hz monitor.

We saved a hundo by reusing their old RAM, but it is stuck at 2133, lol. Not a big deal as they do play more on the Xbox than PC, but, they are about to get dumped a lot of random Steam games from me

Another chip hot off the press, 2021 week 15.

MSI rolled-back the E2 beta BIOS I complained about. ( at MSI forums )
E1 is final - today.
( passed QA I guess - even with PPT not working for All core o/c's )
Not going to flash back.
The E2 is working for me, with its problems ...

Not sure if it's the right thread for this, but I'm having a weird issue with my new 5600x. My system is 100% stable in stress tests (cinebench, blender, etc) and gaming but crashes (freeze followed by black screen) when resuming from very long idle times (multiple hours).

Very simple PBO settings (-20 undervolt, +100 MHz), 3200C16 RAM @ XMP, latest AGESA installed.

Any ideas what the issue could be?

I turned off all power management. If you want to be eco, I suggest others opinion. As it is, I find leaving everything active leads to better responsiveness and reliability. My electricity costs are low. Everyting is run through a UPS.

Right place ...

I believe one of your core undervolt is too low.
( not enough power at idle )
There are similar problems with undervolting.

Still quite pleased with my replacement 5900X. The first one would randomly BSOD at stock, even without XMP. Anyway, a great CPU.
