Is it much faster or faster at all than a Intel i9 14900k ?

May compare the two but not sure if it is worth it.

Can get it tomorrow but big but I am worried it is a waste of time.

Yes, and if you use avx-512 it will trample the Intel. Other than less power at most other tasks, they are even. But the power use (and the heat it produces) is not a trivial difference.

For workstation use, 7950X (non 3D) is around 3% faster than 14900K.

I don't think it matters all that much. If you're gaming a 4K you'll be GPU bound in most titles so not even an X3D would make a difference.

I think the main reason to prefer one over the other is that the AM5 platform still has an upgrade path if you are the type of person that might want to go down that route at some point.

Otherwise it's basically a crap shoot as far as performance goes, though the Zen 4 CPU will get that performance for less power, which may be appealing if electricity costs are high or you've always got it running.

Well, DDR4 automatically limits you to the 14900K.

Depending on the kind of productivity programs you run, you may get away with a 14700K, or even a 14600K.

Just set the power limits according to Intel's spec and you'll lose performance only when running programs that blast all cores for long periods of time, while losing barely anything at burst-type workloads like photo editing.

It's going to run much cooler and quiter with such a setup.

And if you care about hybrid graphics and don't use a VRR display, then Intel is the better choice.

If you have a 12900K, 13900K or 14900K there is no reason to buy a 7950X.

I don't think it makes sense to build around a 7950X for you given you already have a current system, unless you need a 2nd system up and running. Or if you have the extra money and just like to play around with new builds for the fun of it, though IMO this still doesn't make much sense.
