Uhm,

I jumped into my BIOS earlier to have my first go at overclocking and although I'm able to change my frequency, it doesn't allow me to lower my multiplier. From what I've read, lowering the multiplier and upping the frequency is usually the best way.

I tried just straight up picking up the frequency with x11 and could barely get an overclock even before it would fail at boot. I'm thinking it's cause it's at x11 still?

I've got low temperatures and a good PSU, so I don't see what the deal is.

Not on stock cooling either.

It's an AMD X2 4200+ and I've got an ASUS A8N SLI-32 Deluxe motherboard.
If you need any more information, let me know.

I want to take my first real crack at overclocking. Recently upgraded to an 8800GT and I know a little OC'ing will help keep my CPU up to speed with my new card.

whats your current clock? amd cpus can only clock downwards...not upwards (unless you have a black edition amd or an fx series chip). if you want to overclock, you'll need to set the ht frequency to 4x or even 3x to gain more cpu. you'll also need to set your memory divider to 200/166 or whatever (i have the same board but using an opteron 170). my voltage is at 1.30v yet im at 2.5Ghz.

btw what are your specs for your comp?

Specs are the following:

X2 4200+ @ Stock Speeds (Using that stupid built-in "NOS" thing that ASUS has, I set it at 8% or whatever and it was 2.35 or something like, but I wanted to learn how to do this manually)
2GB OCZ PC4000 DDR500 @ 250mhz according to CPU-Z
8800GT (Stock speeds, brand new)

If you need anymore info, just let me know.

I thought you had to lower your multiplier and raise your Frequency? Man, I'm so lost.

Would you mind offering a nice step-by-step about how would I do this in the BIOS secretanchitman since you have the same mobo, or direct me somewhere to start doing some more reading?
I'm pretty lost at this point, but I'd love to hit at least 2.5-2.6ghz on the cooling I have. Which is a XP-90c on the CPU and the Antec 900 (so lots of fans and what not).

Cheers!

Although I appreciate the response, in his guide is states:

1. Max HTT/FSB should be first ..*only works if motherboard has locks. Most A64 boards do today. Sata 1 and 2 are not locked on some nforce mobos use 3 and 4.
-set CPU multi to 6 or 7, this will take CPU out of equation
-set memory to SPD and 100, this will take memory out of equation
-Increase HTT/FSB up until you fail to boot or there abouts, back down 5%, (HTT * 0.95), this is your max safe HTT.

I am not able to (or am too dumb to find) the option to change my CPU multiplier.

Where and how the heck do I set memory to SPD and 100? I didn't see that anywhere in my BIOS.

Tried enabling the over-voltage on a few options, raised it to 215 (over 200 - not huge) and the OC failed.

Man, I'm so lost. Lol.

Read your MOBO manual. I have the same board and processor. The literature on the MOBO will show you where that change can be made. If you don't have this figured out by the time I get home from work, I will post your instructions, but it is in manual.

Also, Like someone said above, don't worry about testing how high you mobo can go. The CPU will run out of room before the MOBO does. I just went through and retested all my limits.

I run the 4200+ at 2.5 no problem. I could push it a bit more, but don't want to risk it.

Good luck

oh, and do not enable over-voltage on the board, you can raise the vcore manually.

The ram dividers on that board are on a sub-menu of the "CPU config" page, it's labled
"max mem clock" and the settings are DDR400, DDR333, DDR266, DDR200. The DDR333 setting is what you should use. You also need to drop the HT multi from default 5x to 4x, it's also on the CPU config page.

With a bump in vcore you should be able to do 240x11=2.64ghz, using the DDR333 mem divider that will run your ram at stock DDR400. These are the settings I have my sons 4200+ gaming rig running

And the CPU multi is on the "Jumper free" page, You first have to select manual control, then the multi selections appear.

Err, couldn't find the things you pointed out GuitarDaddy - and kookie0326, I'm going to find an e-copy of the manual since I lost the original and do a bit of reading.

Nowhere in "CPU Config" did I see even the letters HT, so...
Also, didn't see Max Mem Clock, but I was able to set the memory at a "Limit" in Mhz. Right now it's at 250Mhz. No DDR333, DDR400, ect.

Bleh.

Ok, I didn't notice you had the 32-deluxe board, it's a little different than the standard A8N-sli deluxe.

You have found the memory dividers which go 100,166,183,200,250. You need to change this to 166.

The HT multi is on the "chipset" page and is labeled "K8 to NB frequency" this is set to 1000mhz default, you need to change it to 800mhz

The field on the jumperfree page that lets you change the CPU multi is labeled "Change VID/FID" once you set this to manual you will see the selection for CPU multi

P.S. - I changed my HT multi (as you said GuitarDaddy) to 8x since it was the only option that resembled 800Mhz.

Well, computer wouldn't boot. >_> Not even the BIOS.

Had to reset CMOS.

Le sigh.

I think you mean LDT bus, not IDT. LDT = Lightning Data Transport, the original name for HyperTransport.

Set the HT multiplier to 4X. The point is that you don't want the HT to be over 1000MHz. When you start increasing the HT link over 200MHz at the standard 5X multiplier, it will obviously go over 1000MHz. Changing it to 4X will keep it from doing that until you reach 250MHz. Change the Ram speed to 166MHz. This will cause the Ram (if it is DDR400) to run at its rated speed if you manage to get to 250MHz HT link speed. If you do infact have DDR500 ram, then make the RAM speed option 200. This will make it run at its rated speed at 250MHz HT link. I can run at 240MHz with that CPU at 1.425V. That isn't a bad place to start.
