haven't been following this battle between AMD and INTEL much so forgive me for being uninformed. Does AMD have a response to the conroe forthcoming? If so when is it coming?

July 23-27th. In the form of major price cuts. That is all they can do at this moment in time.

I heard they have a quad core coming down the pipe. Would this cause AMD to ramp up production on the quad core processors to help combat the conroe?

Not until their 65nm process matures. Too bad, too, Kentsfield (two Conroes in a single package) will come early 07.

They're going to ride this out, and cut prices.
They'll try for performance crown with K8L, in late 07/08.

K8L is coming at mid-07, for the server versions;

For the desktops, there is no firm roadmap yet; we only know that it will be no later than Q1-08.

To say that K8L itself is coming in 08 is quite misleading.

4x4 for the .... ummm .... benchmark win?

As for k8l, i've heard dual core k8l in 1H 2007, quad in 2008 or something like that.

SPeaking of quadcore, has anybody tested scalability on the woodcrests? I've seen dual dual core results but what about quad proc machines?

Can anyone supply a link to a well written AMD 4x4 article? I'd like to read up on it for a bit.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I saw the price cut table and seems even AMD's top of the line product, the FX series will be dropped a well to $799 I think? They are really feeling the pressure. When Intel doesn't have an answer to K8, Intel's PEE are still priced $999.00 and I dont remember any drop on PEE even when Intel released new PEE.

Price cuts this month (50% off the X2s)
65nm will be at mature yields in November, so expect some improvements there for a Jan release
K8L they've announced for H1 (mid-year) 2007, and quad core in early 2007 for K8
2008 will bring quad core K8L or possibly K10 (it's still unclear)

You'd have to be insane to buy either of those chips... If youre crazy enough to shell out 1000 dollars for a chip, youre crazy enough to do it for netburst!

I'd hardly call them "mature" if you consider that the lower-end parts will be coming out first. I'd say it'll likely be the "Winchester" of 65nm, which will bring cost reduction for AMD and insanely lower power draw, not necessarily higher clocks.

K8L is pretty unclear too, in my opinion. I'd guess 1H2007 because of all the chatter I've been hearing about it but I havent had the fortune of actually being in contact with one (or finding someone who has one and is willing to talk about it).

keyspalyr2003: 4x4 is basically 2S with SLI/Crossfire. There's very little information besides that, the most interesting being that some of those fabled "accelerators" could be slotted into the second socket. Another interesting tid bit is that AMD has said that Quad-core AM3s could be thrown into 4x4, too.

Stoneburner: There aren't any woodcrest Xeon MPs. Intel will release Tulsas, which will be dual-core Netbursts with lots of cache to make up for the 533-667FSB. They dont sound too good, in my opinion, but that's all Intel will have for the MP space.

no quad socket core-based stuff for a while. AMD still wins there.

The problem I'm facing at the moment is that the number of cores seems to be increasing fast enough that it seems almost impossible to justify purchasing a dual socket system. If I buy a dual woodcrest now, in 5 months I'll be able to get the same performance from kentsfield for less than half the price. normally in that amount of time it would be exceptional to get the same performance for 20% less.

speaking of way off into the future, have we seen pricing for cloverton (dual socket kentsfield) yet?

Well, the revision "G" 65nm cpu will have some improvments to the core. A L3 Cache that is 'Shared' is one of the improvments and should help in certain area's.

But K8L will be the next 'major' core revision until the new arch comes out in 09. Thats what the AMD Rep said anyways. But no real info on the new Arch yet. Just that one is coming from them.

Here's One

It's been awhile since I read them, but I think they both talk about 4x4 - The first seems a little biased.

What happened to AMD's 'Anti-HyperThreading'? I thought it was supposed to come out the 23rd/24th?
