When they put the OC scaling in terms of bars.. it's impressive to see the red bar just jumps massively.

AMD certainly did not push the clocks at all and NV jump all over them once the bar is set so low.

I don't put much stock in max oc reviews. What if they put a massive ocing 7970 vs a dud 670? Kinda skews the results. I know my oc from the factory 670 is on par with the 680 and that's with lower power consumption to boot. That's what I know I'm getting for $400. Now please point me to the $399 7970 with aftermarket cooling and a factory guaranteed overclock. I'm not big on spending $400+ and hoping for overclocking.

IMO AMD doesn't need a response to the GTX 670. The GTX 670 was in response to the 7950. Actually, AMD upping the 7950's clock speed substantially to match the 7970 would be a good idea IMO. I have no idea why they have underclocked it aside from trying to manipulate uninformed consumers to buy the 7970.

Yeah but that overclock is massive, particularly on the memory. I think it represents a highly binned card.

Stock vs stock 680 is faster by a bit, but not with max oc. They are pretty close acc to all websites

Will there be a Nvidia alternative to the 7850 in terms of gaming + GPU Compute? I'd love to add some green cards to my current batch of red, but they would need to be able to deliver on more than gaming.

Keep up the pressure on AMD though guys, I'm not picking up any 7850s until they hit $200 or lower.

Gigabyte HD7970 = $499

Now look at HD6970 vs. GTX580. At the time GTX580 cost $500 and HD6970 cost $370. Now look at the performance increase from HD6970/580 to HD7970 @ 1250mhz/GTX670 @ 1330mhz in that VRZone review you linked.

It becomes pretty evident the $100 extra spent today for 5-6% more performance from 7970 will not make games any more playable. However, that $100 will net a HUGE performance increase next time it's put towards a next generation videocard.

Same thing happened with HD4870 vs. 280, HD4890 vs. 285, HD5870 vs. GTX480, and will happen with GTX670 vs. HD7970/680.

No one can tell you if $100 savings is worth 5-6% extra, but based on how last generation of cards fare today, I am confident that HD7970 will be obsolete just as fast as GTX670 will be (and same for 680). In 14-15 months people will have upgraded to GK110 or HD8000 which might be 25-40% faster than today's cards and provide a tangible upgrade.

Rephrasing the question: Is 5-6% extra speed that 680/7970 OC over GTX670 OC worth $100 today?

How much more future proof was GTX285 against HD4890? Future proofing is a waste of time in this industry. I can think of a couple reason for why someone might want to future proof:

1) The gamer can't upgrade for 2-3 years for financial/personal reasons;
2) The gamer doesn't like the hassle of selling and reselling GPUs often.

Otherwise, in 12 months from now that $100 is better spent on a future card imho. At this point, no one is denying that HD7970 @ 1250mhz is the faster card than GTX670 OC is. But is it worth the extra $ for 5-6%? Depends on the person.

Doubtful. The cheapest 7970 on Newegg is $450. Given that 7990's direct competitor (690) is $1K and is OOS, AMD can easily price 7990 for $849.

I was forced to exchange my original Sapphire OC 7970 for another one, due to a 2D issue but got back one with even higher ASIC quality (77.x% -> 84.x%) so for me at least, yields went in the right direction lol. I bet AMD saved all the really good bins for their upcoming GHZ edition though.

I read chips are binning high. AMD should not have issue if they react with 7975 7955 @ 1100Mhz.

7950 literally has 40-50% OC potential since it ships @ 800Mhz.

Anyway - when you look at modern reviews with new drivers AMD beats OCed 6xx at it's own high speeds since it has so much potential.

Problem is they failed to react day 680 was released and 90% don't buy on "potential" but out of the box experiences. Once people have 680 and 670s in hand, opportunity is lost.

Just like they lost lots of opportunity with outrageous pricing on 79xx and 7870 specifically.

AMD has a good businessman problem not a hardware problem.

The key stat there is OOS. Until that changes, it's all academic.

I don't think the chips are binning high. I think it's just and AMD PR smokescreen. Even the initial batches of the 7970 will hit 1000mhz in their sleep. It's an easy overclock for them.

What reaction is needed? The GTX 670 hasn't even sold out at Newegg. I think offering a GHz edition of the 7970 is a step in the right direction to pass better yields on to customers. Who knows if that will come with a premium or not, but at least there's the option.

The 7850 is all you really need for almost all of the systems out there. The extra performance most of the time goes completely unnoticed.
