Hell, when they first started offering this card it was delivered by a security card with a mini computer in a black velvet case that contained two black cards. One for actual charing, the other for showing as a pass. The computer was to see how much you have spent.

WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?
If you can't figure that out, you're retarded. By the way, you misspelled "weiner" in your sig.

Not retarded, just intoxicated. The mini computer threw off... it makes sense now that I concentrate on it.

And no, I didn't.

It's still the AMEX Black card. AMEX recently started rolling out the titanium metal black cards in test markets in Europe and it's slowly spreading in the U.S.

Everywhere you go, there's simply people who respect your accomplishments and how you got invited for the card (but these people already know you are successful/rich/etc.) or the newbies who don't know you but kiss your ass because they see the card. THAT gets tiring sometimes. Kanye's "Gold Diggers" song is so true in elitist clubs.

On the other side, if you're using this at a grocery store or something, it confuses the hell out of people since they have never seen an AMEX Black card before.

Do you find yourself using other cards at more common places of business like the grocery store?

It's actually made of titanium and has a minimum spenditure amount of $127,000. My only problem with it is that it has a SLIGHT concave curviture to it. Otherwise it's a great travel card.

I've gotten that "WTF" look, too. My Discover Platinum card finally wore out (signature panel now read "VOID", mag strip was failing), so Discover sent me a reissue. But for some reason, they decided not to send me a plain old silver Platinum card like my previous issue - they sent me a TRANSLUCENT PURPLE card. Every time I hand it to a clerk, it's a bona-fide 'wtf' moment.

If you have a Platinum, what are the requirements before you can ask for the Centurion, and to the limits still apply?

i use to work at costco where they ONLY accept AMEX. There were 2 members that came in all the time and they both had an AMEX black. Yes you have to have tons of money, yes you have to freely spend that money, and no you can't apply for the card AMEX sends only select ppl an invite to get one

Also throw in like the $2500 per year plus the $250,000 worth in spending that you need to make every year for the invite.

The card is available only by invitation and, as of January 1, 2006, requires minimum annual spending of $250,000 on another American Express card and exceptional credit history among other requirements. Certain requirements have been known to be waived for major celebrities and business figures. As of 2006 the annual cardholder fee was $2,500 and it is estimated that there are fewer than 10,000 cards issued worldwide.

I know someone who has the AMEX black card... AMEX waived the 2500 USD yearly fee for him. But he probably puts several million a year on it so...

Yes.

If you read that correctly and even checked other websites, when they first rolled out the Centurion cards in Europe they used this proceedure.

The credit limits on my regular cards are higher than the AMEX Black. The expense/benefits ratio on this card isn't enticing and plays off the "image" of exclusivity with the posers.

Most all people I know that have the black is *NOT* because they're rich, but b/c they *expense* a lot of business on the card. A $50k/yr Corporate Event Planner can charge up event items on the card and easily reach the Black Card threshold in a matter of months. The same goes with small business owners that charge up overhead.

As a money magazine said regarding this subject, the rich have regular cards (i.e. Bill Gates, Warren Buffett) and are frugal. They became wealthy with this attitude, not by wasting huge $$ on a low bang/buck poser card.

It used to be all "hush hush." Snoopes.com wrote about this also I believe.

I'm pretty sure it's more than that. And your income has to be HUGE. I knew a Saudi kid in HS that moved back to Saudi Arabia halfway through to live with his father... who had one (oil... lots of oil). According to him, the card has the power to open stores at any hour of night for your personal shopping needs. And you can empty stores to shop alone if you so desire. Maybe he was exaggerting... maybe not. But it sounds hardcore.

I heard that they give after hours shopping privileges, and can send roses to your father in Cairo as well. I'm not kidding.

Realistically, it's up to the store owner/manager whether they want to bend over backwards for a Centurion card holder just like with any other customer. Amex can call them up at 3 in the morning and tell them they'll pay them $1000 to open the store for you, and the store owner can tell them to f--- off if they want to. I don't think their Amex merchant agreement REQUIRES them to do it.

Exactly, like I said, it is the keys to the executive washroom, but first there has to be one in exsistance.
