American pitbull attack

So my dog was attacked by a pitbull while my dad was out walking in my front yard. She was leashed and the pitbull was loose. Owner of pitbull said she would pay all vet fees. Which ended up being $207, as we took her to emergency clinic. She has a couple cuts on her head and neck, but she's doing fine now. This is not the first incident we've had with this dog either, which makes me want to file a report. Luckily the other time I was able to run inside the house with my dog. Should I send a letter to homeowner's association? Police? What's common practice? Thanks.

Log it all. Right now it's your dog. Next time, it might be your neighbor's kid.

I would give the same advice for any aggressive dog. For all the pitbull lovers, I have nothing against pitbulls - they can be very sweet dogs.

absolutely file a police report. if it is a dog that is capable of major damage along with unrestained access to the neighborhood; it could be much worse next time.

I love pitbulls but I think you should definitley take this matter in with the police as soon as possible. Don't wait another minute. Owner should be punished for leaving their animal unleashed.

Yes, you should make a report to Animal Control. The point is not to retaliate to the Pitbull's owner but to make an official record of the event so that the authorities can advise the owner and lay the ground work in case another attack occurs.

I know it's an American pitbull because the owner said so.

Yeah..definitley call your local authorities right away. This is not the dogs fault..it's the owners fault. They should be punished in some sort of way for one, not leashing up their animal, and two for not taking special care of a special breed of dog.

I think Labs have more reported bites than Pit Bulls/ Staff. Terriors/etc.

The other dog being provoked is totally IRRELEVANT. The OP's dad was in HIS yard with his dog on a leash. The Pitbull was loose and running. The pitbull is at fault no matter what transpired. The owner is an idiot, as are most people who own Pitbulls. I would have shot the Pitbull in my yard and dealt with the consequences.

My sister has a pit cross breed and he's so aggressive that she can't even walk him with a leash. There's no way in hell she'd let him roam freely-file that thing as everyone says.

I disagree to a point. In my opinion, the dog (pitbull or not) is not at fault for this incident. It's the owner who was careless with this type of breed of dog. Pitbulls take a lot of attention and training to make sure they're suitable for society which is obvious the owner didn't do a good enough job at. Please do not make a statement like that again regarding that most people who own pitbulls are idiots. That's false and bias.

Let your Pitbull run free and come onto my property and attack my dog.....you would be dragging it home as it would not be breathing. I would shoot it on the spot and be within my legal rights to protect my property and my life.

Most people who own Pitbulls are idiots. There, I said it again. I don't care if you own one and take offense. The operative word is MOST. Having a dog that cannot be trusted NOT to attack other animals or people says alot about the type of person who would own such a breed. The breed is rather useless as a pet but people with a penchant for "macho" things tend to get dogs of this type. You read about unprovoked Pitbull attacks all the time. There is definitely something wrong with this breed. They do not belong in neighborhoods with other people and animals. If you have to have one of these worthless dogs do so in the country.

Telling me the Pitbull owner in this case is at fault changes nothing. The dog attacked another dog on that dog's property. If it would have happened in my yard the Pitbull would have been dead.

File a report but when you write it, put down all the information you can that shows it was the owner's fault and not the dog's. I hate when dogs get put down jsut because their owners are assholes. But definitely file something or the next time it might be something or someone dead on the other end.

Obviously the situation got handled without the need to kill anything. This is a much preferable outcome then your shoot first and ask questions later approach.
