I grew up in San Diego and the IACC yachts were the first ones I saw. I have a soft spot for those beasts. So sleek, yet you could see a lineage to a regular sailboat. These things look more like TIE fighters
Do these new ones get the ginormous mainsails out? Haven't seen them yet in any of the pics or video. That was always a big part of the race was switching from upwind to downwind.
No, there are no changing of the sails with these new boats. They make their sail choice based on the wind speed before the racing starts and it is set.
Definitely no spinnaker like the old 25 meter boats.
I used to crew on a 30' sailboat in the late 80s. Definitely takes skill to set a spinnaker and douse it. We had a guy who was really good handling that sail.
