I grew up in San Diego and the IACC yachts were the first ones I saw. I have a soft spot for those beasts. So sleek, yet you could see a lineage to a regular sailboat. These things look more like TIE fighters

Do these new ones get the ginormous mainsails out? Haven't seen them yet in any of the pics or video. That was always a big part of the race was switching from upwind to downwind.

No, there are no changing of the sails with these new boats. They make their sail choice based on the wind speed before the racing starts and it is set.

Definitely no spinnaker like the old 25 meter boats.

I used to crew on a 30' sailboat in the late 80s. Definitely takes skill to set a spinnaker and douse it. We had a guy who was really good handling that sail.

the symmetric spinnakers for sure. I think the asymmetrics are supposed to be easier, but I've never used one.

If there's one thing I'm good at on the boat, it's trimming that kite. If the helmsman is not being an ass (which he usually is) we'll go faster than the rest of the fleet downwind, and can usually pick up a position or two on the run.

A couple months ago we were in 2nd place racing against the tide toward the leeward mark. The boat in front of us doused their spinnaker too early and couldn't make way against the current, we decided to keep ours up until we were past the mark, and once we rounded we had the current pushing us toward the windward mark for the 2nd lap. We actually made the windward mark before the boat we passed made the leeward.

Too little, too late.

With the two match penalties and the hole they're, it's a almost a foregone conclusion that Oracle will lose.

Im not so sure...the boats are very even now, just comes down to tactics, tacking skills and maybe some luck....the Oracle boat sits very well in the water now, completely different from the first 5 races...

This is where it starts to pi** me off.....

Amazing that both teams are now tied going into the final match tomorrow.

The is a Red Sox type story for Team Oracle.

If it's "America's Cup," Why the fuck are they allowing ferriners compete?

Typical Larry Ellison...The rules do NOT apply to him.

(ask the City of San Jose and the airport authority)

There's only two Americans in the entire thing. Even Team USA is mostly kiwi with an aussie captain.

What amazes me about these boats is at full tilt, they can hit 40 knots, or around 50 mph, something my 17' boat with a 115hp outboard just hits at WOT.

Damned quick.

I've spent a good part of my life on and around sailboats, and I am impressed as hell with the speeds they get out of those big cats. On the other hand, try as I might, I can't muster up even a little love for these ungainly beasts. There's no poetry or soul or beauty in them at all. I really find it hard to care about which one of them wins.

Pretty much the same here.

No idea when it was on or what channel. I did read a very interesting article on Wired shortly after the death of that guy. The boats they use are fucking insane.

So the final is tomorrow at 1:15 Pacific? What website streams this in HD?

Ah! There's nothing so humiliating as sailing over the top of a boat that tries a lee bow and misses! But then, New Zealand had no choice.

And the overlap at the start that was missed by inches will go down in history.

That's wing sails and hydrofoils for you. It's still sailing and honestly I think most spectators would find regular sailing way too slow and boring.

Do the current wing sails have adjustable thickness? I know they tend to have slats but just wondering......

Is there a delay on that YouTube vid?

I am watching race 9 now because wiki said it was one of the best ac races ever. These boats are truly ludicrous.

I believe they do have adjustable camber.
