Are you really THAT politically correct that you just want everyone to interbreed? Do you really strive for a day when everyone looks the same and there's no variety? I think the world would be a boring place like that. Unless you're one of those people who hates those who look different than you and thinks they should be assimilated.

I agree with rh71. Once we're all the same colour, and pretty similar, we won't have all the racial issues. I'd gladly surrender uniqueness in order to avoid uncomfortable racial tension.
Hate to break it to ya, but no matter what color we are, we will still discriminate against gays.

I have a feeling that you're probably pretty "left wing". If you haven't learned by now, hatred is a human instinct. If it's not one thing we're hating each other for, it would be another. Removing the excuses won't remove the hate. The excuse could be anything, it doesn't matter. Hate is the constant.

Even if you made everyone brown skin, brown hair, brown eyes, a 5'9, there would STILL be wars and there still would be discrimination. They'll find something to fight about, probably political views or religion.

In fact, most wars are fought between neighbors that look mostly alike.

All of the black people that live in Africa now or are here for college are really dark, almost literally black. However, most American black people are more brown or dark tan looking. Is that because they have white in them from racial mixing over the past couple hundred years?

I find in general american whites are less white than scandinvians, is it because they have black in them from racial mixing over the past couple hundred years?

I don't know why you keep calling me PC. I couldn't care less about being careful about what I say... it's simply the way I feel things should be. Call me naive if you want. I hate politics, I hate religion. Aside from displaying tact, I've never cared about being mindful of what may hurt others' feelings. I say it because that's what I feel.

And BTW, mix = variety. Boring ? Hardly. I do agree there will be other forms of hate regardless, but if this is one thing that shouldn't happen because it may be boring, there are issues I can't help you with...

I wouldn't call it being similar. People will still have their different ethnicities, but will be a flavor of a few. I don't see how that's a bad thing, and anyway it's only inevitable.

I would say that over time there has been adaptation of the pigments to an American climate which is different from that on the coastlines of Africa.

No. It is due to interbreeding. If you go to the sea islands where the populations have been less "contaminated" you will find they are much blacker.

Evolution needs a lot of generations. It took many thousands of years for blacks, whites, Asians, etc to to become different ecotypes.

Why are you telling me?

Oops! Quoted the wrong person. Probably because your avatar is the shady looking black man.

So you think it's them adapting to a cooler climate, and not inter-racial mixing?

Wow, this thread is just...wow... Ok, time for a little genetics 101. INDIVIDUALS do not evolve. You cannot gradually change your skin pigments to favor a climate. Evolution is a process of selective breeding that occurs over millions of years. Basically, in order for what you propose to actually happen, there would have to be a survival advantage of the lighter skin tones whereby the darker skin tones would be phased out because of breeding with lighter skin tones.

btw - just to add some fuel... Observations of this nature especially when made by white colonials has lead to genocide.

When is that transcript from?

Garrett Morris: [ interrupting ] Well, I think I understand the problem with the tests. But the fact is that people have been saying that white people are smarter than black for hundreds of years. We've only had I.Q. tests for 20 or 30 years. How did the idea of white intellectual superiority originate?
We've had IQ tests since the early 1900's IIRC, so unless it's from the 1930's that's just wrong.

That's from an SNL transcript. But since someone typed it up and put it on the Intarweb it must be true

While that would make you a little darker you wouldn't reach "African black".

I'll look but I remember reading that that on average African Americans are 20% white based on DNA test although the sample size was small. Also 80% had Native American ancestory.

Why think in such a limited fashion? Hell, the food we eat also might havea lot to do with it.

Because I've never thought food or climate would make a persons skin lighter. People tan, but I've never seen a dark skinned person get pale by staying away from the sun.

uhhh, you do know that we all have lineage that originates in africa right?

Yes but at one time the pre/human population was light skinned. Dark skin was an evolutionary development.. We only theorize that everyone in Africa was black at the time of the journey out.

i would say science shows otherwise but common sense asks when is the last time you saw a white ape?

Actually science shows exactly what I said. Go shave a monkey.

Dark skin was an evolutionary development after losing hair in response to UV lights affect on folate levels

Also "out of africa" is a theory and although the most accepted not the only one.

People will find other things to hate. Hair color, eye color, height... Skin color is just easiest.

It's definitely a person to person thing. I'm sure the racial mixing is a part of it... However, I've seen a black girl that looked like the swiss miss girl. She was white and had blonde hair...yet both of her parents were darker than the hot chocolate her look-a-like sells. I was speechless when I learned this....I guess the point is that looks can be decieving and color and race are totally different things.

national geographics take on this thread

i would say this is good science

from the nina jablonski page:

"The earliest members of the hominid lineage probably had a mostly unpigmented or lightly pigmented integument covered with dark black hair, similar to that of the modern chimpanzee. The evolution of a naked, darkly pigmented integument occurred early in the evolution of the genus Homo. A dark epidermis protected sweat glands from UV-induced injury, thus insuring the integrity of somatic thermoregulation."

the photo on that page is brilliant. either light skinned modern humans became darker, as did the wrinkles on their feet and hands, or dark skinned humans became lighter and those wrinkles did not change. which makes more sense?
