its easy to say that the Geforce4 4600 is being butchered by the Radeon 9700

Impressive. Not buying one though.

Things like this worry me, not unduly, but they do nonetheless. It will of course get resolved but I'm amazed that this slipped through the net.

We did not run into any major issues with the Radeon 9700 Pro's drivers although a few minor bugs did crop up. The most irritating was that we had to reboot our testbed after switching antialiasing or anisotropic filtering modes between Unreal Tournament 2003 benchmarks otherwise the new settings would not take effect.
Can see that irritating me to...

Things are certainly hotting up...(Oh yeah...forgot about this, the Parhelia wouldn't run the tests! LOL and Anand didn't run any tests on a Triple view monitor setup either!)

w00t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Been waiting for this wonderful review!.

Edit: Anyone else notice that the cards benchmarks are much better than those German reviews that were posted last night?....I think in it they had the Parahelia winning at high resolution in UT2003!! LOL

All and all this card performed VERY well, It is in everyway a cut-above the competition in terms of performance. I can say though (and I'll probably get beat down for it) that its not as fast as I thought it would be. I guess some of the consumer hype (fanboys...) and the way I precived the initial anand benchmarks had me thinking it was even faster then it is. I mean when I seen that it was 250% faster then a 4600, it really only ment that the 4600 scored say 40fps and it scored 100, this only happend under the Absolute most intensive tests done, and wasnt NEARLY as large of a gap at normal resolutions and settings (say, 1024/768 2x AA) I know that 40 to 100 is a 250% increase but its just that I precive there to be more difference because the way its displayed and worded. when I see the actual framerates it doesnt look as impressive.

Its all purely subjective though, no one can deny that it is by far the fastest card out there, But I guess I started to expect the fanboy drivel, for months I've heard nothing but, "R300, sLaY's j00r nEwB nViDsH*t pOs!!!" I guess some of it rubbed off hehe.

While it does beat the 4600 handily in basically everything but price. we would be fooling ourselves to think that nvidia doesnt have a trump card waiting to pounce with the NV30. Wich is good because I want the price of this card to come down. and vice versa. Overall I'm overjoyed with this card. It might not live up to the godlike hype its recieved all over the net (to ME!) but its clearly head and shoulders above nvidias current offerings and will only help this market get higher quality products cheaper and quicker then ever before

thank you ATI! get your fab's in gear and make sure your engineers are well paid I'll be looking for your next card in 6-8 months! and it better be better then the NV30 when it comes out!

Because of its close proximity in price, we wanted to include the Matrox Parhelia however with the latest build of UT2003 and the latest Parhelia drivers we could not get our benchmarks to complete. Seeing as how the majority of our benchmark suite depends on UT2003, we had to exclude the Parhelia from this comparison.

DOH!

Looks like the Radeon 9700 wants all the CPU you can throw at it, id love to see what happens when some of them boyz over at MO get ahold of em with 3500mhz P4s, especially with the 2.8ghz release right around the corner.

im gonna wait for the NV30 for 2 reasons.

1. NV30 is likely to be much faster at a similar price point, even if it isnt itll drive down the price the of the R9700.

2. After a few months we can see some more optimised drivers, some CPU scaling with overclocked pentium 4s, and then i can make my decision when i see some NV30 vs. R9700 benchies.

Kudos to ATi for making a competitive card!!

OMFG, Did you all see the benchies with 4AA and 16 Ansio? rools: The 9700 pounded, the ti4600. I think that were the real beauty of the card begins to excell. I use 2x and 8-16 ansio with my 8500. Now bumping it to 4x and 16 all the time and SMACKING EVERYTHING down to a silicon pulp is just awsome.

Unfortantly I'm not going to buy a new video card until my 8500 worked its 100 dollars off or doom3 comes out.

10$ to the first person who can find me a benchmark where any card in history has ever beat a previous generation card by 400% in any benchmark under any circumstance! Heh.. this is a first. What's pretty sad is the R300, when dual texturing, technically has the same fillrate as the Ti4600, but is still destroying it by getting 500% the framerate!!!!
