I thought he (andylawcc) was implying that if English was not your native language, you naturally wouldn't do as well on the verbal part of the SAT's.

Brotherman, you applied to Cal as EECS? the index cutoff is getting higher each year, that's why a 1450 is might not be high enough, since you'd need like >>>700 on all 3 sat2's along with 4.0 weighted gpa (should be easy with honors/ap classes)

Geez. Get with it. After a certain point SATs mean jack. One of my best friends probably got the lowest SAT score in his class at MIT at 1360 but you know what? When he graduated he was 7th in his class with a 4.97 GPA, had fun and is now a successful trader at Morgan Stanley.

I went to a high school full of Wiz kids in NYC. There was one family of guys, the Kuo brothers, who were the real wiz kids my year. They all graduated when they were something like 14 or 15, had 1600 SATs and went to Harvard. Now what are they doing? One is a trader, the other an ambulance chaser and the other is still going to school. Woohoo! So much for using your brains to improve society. The guys I work with are all normal guys who are bright but not geniuses. They make 7 to 8 figures a year and have fun doing it.

In the real world, I would much rather hire a guy with lower SATs and real world know-how than a book smart guy who sits in front of his computer all day.

I wouldn't. I would much rather have the geek with high scores, and who hasn't been in your so-called "real world." ...much easier to train and *mold* into a model worker

DoggieDog--you went to Stuy? Bronx Sci? Anyway, agree with you about the SAT scores meaning jack out here in rw: Asian female, high standardized test scores, very decent $$$ (buying a house 2 years after graduating college), but no where NEAR as bright as some of the ppl walking around this company. My brain operates off the discarded shavings of ideas garnered from their brains. Very pathetic.

Thanatopsis - yeah, I get what he was implying. I take offense to the specific inference that Chinese ppl are particularly lacking in verbal "skills." There are lots of other "native languages" other than Chinese.

Anyways, most of my reaction was due to a pissy mood (no, not PMS); normally I could give a crap about what's PC---but I gotta protect my ppls!

I respect people who learn English as a second language. Quite frankly, most Americans lack general verbal skills You gots to axe yo-self, why dis be like dat?
