In a time when there was a 12 round draft, Andre made the Eagles as a walk-on, and played the first ten years of his 12 year career for them.
He was one of the most feared safties ever to play the game, and, yeah, he played a little dirty. He lead the Eagles defense in tackles in four years, and these Eagles during the Buddy Ryan years had some of the best defenses the NFL had EVER seen.
One year, for instance, the Eagles defense led the league BOTH in least yards allowed by pass AND by run, which is almost impossible to do.
We Eagles fan loved those teams. Those defenses struck real terror in the hearts of opposing offenses.
Off the field, Andre Waters was a down to earth, likable and very accessible guy. He came out of nothing, growing up in dirt poor rural Florida and attending nearby (to me) Cheyney College, a small, almost entirely black, nearly dysfunctional college, but Waters, at 5' 8" and 185 lbs., made it all the way to an impressive 12 year career in the NFL.
He loved Buddy Ryan, and Buddy Ryan loved him.
His number, # 20, is worn by all-pro Eagles safety Brian Dawkins.
You can be sure that more than one unknowlegable fanboy will weigh in here about how dirty Waters was reputed to be. May I heartily invite each and every one of you to go fvck yourself in advance.
