Android DPI scalling?

How is this handled in Android?
Does it depend on skinjob? If, so how does it work in Xiaomi and Huawei phones, does anyone know?

Currently I have L640XL, and despite utter lack of "phablet apps" (and apps in general), I like the fact that I can scale the "information density" on the OS level. So I can see more tiles, more webpage content and more listed items without scrolling. Does it work like that in android?

I assumed it does, which is why I am hunting for an android phablet, but recently I saw a device (can't remember which one it was, some chinese oem) where same amount of content was visible as on the smaller screened device. Which, for me, defeats the purpose, since most of the time I read.

I'd appreciate anyone who could educate me.

in android, you can change the dpi too . though i believe the phone has to be rooted.

with xpose , and app settings plugin, you can even change the dpi and font properties for each individual app.

DPI can be set system wide in build.prop.

I've always done this with a rooted device but I've read that you don't technically need root. You just need a custom recovery that allows mounting of system partitions in RW mode.

(I also use Xposed & App Settings for individual DPI settings for apps as well. Very handy!)
