For me, anything with no micro USB port is a non-starter.

The holy trinity IMO is:

Android Phone
iOS Tablet
Windows PC

That way you're not in any one camp and you have the top hardware for each category.

this is actually pretty good, and I'd say this worked last year and definitely 2011. I think Android tablets have caught up immensely well. We're still lacking in apps and tablet UI in general from Google, but the other benefits of Android tablets such as being able to load videos and all your media with little restrictions helps make the Android tablet a better choice for me. When it comes to apps and reading in bed I could go either way, and I'd probably swing iOS simply because the iPads battery life is so much better (especially for standby, like losing 1% a day only).

Does this debate do anything more than confirming one's own bias, nowadays? It may sound harsh but I don't think anyone will be swayed one way or another. Especially in this forum where everyone has at least some technical knowledge.

Those are definitely good points, but, how does one move photos or MP3 files from tablet to PC, PC to tablet, or camera to tablet with an iPad?

Photos are a simple drag and drop away, but other types of files are a completely different story.

I think battery life probably depends on what ROM is on the tablet. They do vary quite a bit.

Here's my piece-of-junk HTC One V cellphone with the phone function turned off on JB (4.2.2):

It'll go maybe just a bit under 40 days on one charge on standby, so it's not a huge difference from my iPad 2.

I just stick it on drop box. If I want to get stuff off the iPhone or iPad I use a cable attached to my PC.

I haven't used a memory card to move shit to/from a phone since my old flip-phone days.

Sounds like me...well, starting sometime next week anyway. Goodbye iPhone 4S, hello Galaxy S4 Active.

Definitely more trouble with iOS. And to top it all off, the way the file system handles files is another hurdle. I use Dropbox if I need to but I use iCloud and Pandora for music, Kindle, Netflix, HBO Go, etc so I do not find myself even running into file transfer issues that much. Streaming is a real convenience.

Impressive. In my experience with Android devices running both stock and CM10 (which gets about the same longevity), I get 3 days standby. And that is with bluetooth, wifi and GPS turned off. Now in iOS devices, those things are always turned on (or it does real intelligent switching) and it still gets crazy standby time. I'd be interested in hearing of an Android device that can get two week standby time with all those features turned on.

Ive said this before, and I'll say it again. What Apple has going for them are the integrability and third party support.

Although I feel that Android OS has matured to being far superior than iOS, I'm considering getting an iPad to run VSTs (Virtual Software Synthesizers) to replace my aging Roland Fantom X7 and my Korg Racks. And as far as I know, there are no VST hosts available for Android .

One thing I will add is that Apple had better watch out for when the first consumer end x86 smartphones/tablets make their appearance.

That's what I've evolved to, use the Windows pc to jailbreak and root my mobile devices, LOL.

I do use an iPod Touch too, current gen.

I do it with Dropbox..... except for iOS/iPad. Ugh. Good thing I only read on my iPad.

http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1jxrcd/i_did_something_today_on_my_new_nexus_7_that_for/

Step one - Upload a song I recently paid for to my dropbox account. Step two - Download that song from your dropbox to any number of the devices you own.

STOP - Do you own an iOS device??

Me - Yes.

iOS - I'm sorry dave, I'm afraid that unless that is a photo, I cannot let you do that.

Me - You mean I cannot save this song to my iOS music library?

iOS - No

Android - YES YOU CAN!! Simply select the music folder in the export options and you are good to go! I have a number of free apps that can play that for you as well.

Me - iOS this seems like this should be a rather simple option, I mean you can do it for pho..

iOS - YOU MUST DOWNLOAD FROM THE APPLE MUSIC STORE AND USE iCLOUD IF YOU WANT EASE OF MUSIC TRANSFERS WITHOUT PHYSICAL CABLE SYNC!! ALL OTHER OPTIONS ARE VERBOTEN.

I have thought about this in a long time, that iOS restricts access to the filesystem unless its a photo.

Sigh. That reality distortion field is some pretty some strong stuff.

iPad to PC or vice versa you could use iTunes to sync. Though I find iTunes to be difficult to use and understand and slow. So not my prefered method. So I do as most others mentioned, use cloud storage like Dropbox to transfer files.

The iPad has a camera connection kit that lets you connect a camera by USB or SD to transfer photos and videos. That kit also lets you plug in a USB keyboard if you like too, so kinda nice to have.

Hmm... I just noticed the camera connection kit now costs $60 for the lightning port version. Holy crap Apple! Used to be you could get both the USB and SD connectors for $30 together back when it was using the 30 pin connector. Now it's $30 each. *sigh*

I still remember the nightmares of my friends who tried to show their photos or to play songs on someone else's computers and ended up wiping off their iPhones and iPods thanks to "iTunes Sync". Then they came to me for help.. (Not that I knew any better) iTunes is the kind of bloatware that I abhor on PC.

Dropbox requires Internet access. That works most of the time, but not always when traveling in remote areas. BTW, what kind of cable connects a iPad to a PC? iTunes requires joining and installing and becoming linked to Apple. It's a non-starter for my existing jazz collection. There is hope for iPad via Bluetooth links, but that is extra $$$.

Moving music and photos between my Droid and PC is easy. Connect via USB, then drag and drop using Explorer in the PC. If I knew of a cable to do that with a iPad, I might consider it.

The iPad includes a lightning to USB cable that you can plug the iPad into the PC with.

iTunes uses the same Apple account you need to install apps on your tablet just like Google requires a Google account and being linked to Google.

You can sync your personal content, music, movies, etc with your iPad using iTunes.

iTunes is definitely not as easy as drag and drop. But it can get your content to your tablet.

It took me over an hour to load couple of music album for my daughter on her iPod touch. I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't load one of the album no matter what I did. It turned out it moved one of the album into another artist album. It took me like another 30 minutes to figure out how to correct it. Granted I'm that familiar with iTunes but it's definitely not user friendly program. Click and drag in Windows would've took me less 10 seconds.

Ya, drag and drop for music would be nice, iTunes can be a effin pain. You can drag and drop photos from your iDevice on to your PC. I've never tried going the other direction.

My brother, a hardcore Apple nut just bought the new Nexus 7 and he loves it. Obviously the app selection isn't as good but he said it blows the Mini away.

I'd really like a decent FS Android tablet with mSD and GPS

The update to 4.3 on my first gen N7 made it useable again, but I don't like the 7" screen, would really like something bigger, reasonable priced that wasn't god awful.
