Annoying Lock Ups

Hey all,

This is getting really annoying. Built a new system and it seems like as soon as I solve one issue that I think is causing me lockups I develop another.

My current issue is that my machine will lock up but it's a slow process. Give you an example. I have WoW opened and playing in one window and my browser / IM etc in the other. Everything goes fine until "something" occurs. When whatever happens occurs it's only a matter of time before the system completely locks up.

If I try to do anything with the taskbar it goes non responsive. Ctrl-alt-del does not work. WoW will be fine for a while until I assume it has to use windows explorer for some reason.

The reason these are so annoying is because I have to hard reboot. Nothing else seems to help and I have no idea how to track down what is going on.

I've updated all my drivers, updated the firmware for my SSD. Bios seems to be the latest. I just don't get it.

The most recent crash was when I tried to open my Visual Studio to do a little programming. It never opened and I couldn't shut it down and my browser which was open at the time also went non-responsive as soon as I tried to interact with it.

Anyone have any advice? Maybe some logging program I could run so that when this happens I can at least see what's going on and pin point the issue?

What does "Event Viewer" say? Anything get logged?

Oh yeah. Things like:

"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

and

"The previous system shutdown at 9:32:00 AM on ‎7/‎21/‎2011 was unexpected."

I grind my teeth every time I see those. I'd love to have a logging program that tells me details like what a program was trying to do, access, etc.

Like right now it seems my Visual Studio (Which was working just fine previously) now causes the lockup. Another issue I had was that I couldn't watch any Flash videos in Firefox. Safe mode seemed to work fine.

I've uninstalled Flash completely just in case that was causing something but decided to leave that issue for another day but this one..it's stopping me from being able to work so I have to get it solved asap.

Sounds like when I had a bad vid card (noted here http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2177579). Brand new card, XFX just ruled it falty yesterday, still waiting for a tech to contact regarding replacement. I would just have odd things lock up, crash, bluescreen or just hard shutdown, black screens, hard freeze with no system response, just randomly. Sometimes it would even game 3 hours before acting up, then sometimes W7 couldn't even boot without just hard locking, bluescreening, or just rebooting itself. If the system is what is in your sig, take out the 580 and try it with integrated Intel video for a bit. If it runs, then you probably have either a card issue or a PSU issue.

Hey there, thanks for the reply. I didn't see your reply before I tried to do a system restore which screwed me up good. It somehow deleted the ntuser.dat from the profile. I spent hours trying to recover before I finally gave in and reinstalled Windows. I didn't do a clean install and tried to minimize my re-configuring everything.

Somewhat worked but I'm having a weird issue which I'm sure is permissions related. Initially when I log on my network icon will show an X but yet it's connected just fine. I'll then find that I can't open any folder on my desktop. Not only that but I can't right click and go to properties on my computer.

If I try to I get a message about it not being able to access it. If I log off and back on it seems to fix it which is very weird.

Other than this issue, I haven't experienced the lockups...yet.
