Please explain the ram...

It says 3gb max, but comes with 1gb. Are there 2 slots or 3?? Thanks .

It can only take a 2gb and a 1gb stick = 3gb it only has two slots.

If you get the chance, test it with two 2 GB sticks. The specs for my V6719NR I got from the Best Buy closeout (linked in my previous post) say the limit is 2 GB, but others in the thread posted that the machine recognizes pairs of 2 GB sticks. Just guessing, but it's possible the specs were published before 2 GB sticks were widely available.

FWIW, I would post the same comments about my machine as Sandan posted about this one. The main difference is, mine has 2GB of L2 cache and a PCMICA card slot instead of the 5-in-1 digital media reader... and mine included a cute little remote control useful for slide show presentations, etc.

Staples

What can I say? :shrug;
It's in their ad.
Online.
Page 1.

Maybe it's in-store only, although it doesn't say that.

~~~ HOT UPDATE ~~~
Staples online version of their weekly ad doesn't show the Compaq F761US, and that model is not shown anywhere on Staples site, probably because it's a closeout.
I phoned one of my local stores and spoke with a CSR named Levi, who said his store was already sold out, but it was still available online only. HOWEVER... If... and ONLY IF... you ask, he said corporate has authorized them to substitute a brand new model (NOT a closeout), C770US, which has a 1.86 GHz Pentium Dual-Core Mobile Processor T2390 CPU for the same price after $50 MIR and $180 instant rebate.
SKU: 750553
The T2390 is a dual core CPU, but I don't believe it is a Core 2 Duo. That wouldn't stop this from being a really good deal for a really usable machine. CC lists it for $599.99 after a $30 MIR.
Dang, Harvey, that's hot. Unfortunately, the local store has plenty of the C761's in stock, so my friend can't take advantage of the situation.
I got one for my wife a while ago from stapels. (AMD CPU laptop). it came with 1 stick of 1G RAM. I added one stick of 2G stick to make 3G total RAM.
I've removed 99% of pre-installed apps and it runs rock solid. Prior to RAM upgrade and app removals, it was a bit slow.
Don't knock that C761 with the Athlon 64 X2. That's the same CPU I got in my V6719NR (noted in previous post), except that mine has 2 GB of L2 cache. It's easily fast enough to run XP Pro.
There will always be another deal of one sort or another, but if you happen to need a laptop, now, either of these one @ $400 looks to be worth checking out.
If it's important to you to be able put XP on either one, start digging for the drivers immediately, and do NOT start without burning the Restore DVD set. If you get the right tech on HP's chat, they will help you find them. Also, search HP's own user forums for the drivers for whichever machine you can get.
Also note that older versions of Norton Ghost should work with these machines for XP, but it does not work with Vista.
