If this has already been asked a million times, please forgive, but........

How does XP install on these newer machines?? I'd consider one if I know all the hardware in 'em is XP compatible.

(Yes, Vista hater)

This is nice for the price, but by no means the latest hardware.......I'd bet XP will work fine.

Compaq C762NR at BB for $399 (no rebate)

BB will the Pentium Dual-Core (not Core 2 Duo) laptop on sale for $400 with no rebates needed.

A friend of mine is needing a cheap laptop and I originally recommended the Staples deal to her. However, which would be a better choice - AMD X2 at 1.9Ghz or Pentium DC at 1.73Ghz?

I'm leaning more towards the X2 for the card reader and what appears to be better GeForce 6100 graphics.

Any thoughts?

Staples one has LightScribe, if that makes any difference to you.

Personally, I wouldn't touch the AMD-based machine. I bought my wife a 1.9ghz X2 HP notebook and it was buggy as hell and slow. I bought her a 1.46 PDC Acer machine and it's noticeably faster than the HP was.

actually the X3100 is slightly faster than the 6100 go and has DX10 capabilities.

the cpu's are pretty close, but the intel i think is slightly faster too, even thought its clocked a little slower.

listing of video cards by perfromance: http://www.notebookcheck.net/I...ator-X3100.2176.0.html

and the Pentium deal at BB has no rebate to do so you save a dollar or 2 on tax, and don't have to do a rebate, and if you have a zone card you will get like $5.00 back too from BB.

all these differences are very small, but in the end the Pentium Dual core is a little better deal at Best Buy.

course if you do get the $30.00 OFF COUPON TO WORK at Staples, things may swing back the other way to the Athlon since it would be like $25.00 cheaper.

Its a very close call.

Here are the specs for this model. It appears to be similar to the one I scored in this thread. It can be done. It's not a task to undetake lightly.

I've posted the steps to do it several times. The two main issues are getting rid of the strangely formatted partition Vista creates and getting all the right drivers. See my long post in this thread for info.

I bought this same laptop at staples a month ago for 449 after all the instant and easy rebates. Gotta tell you I love it. I took off all the compaq bloat ware and did tweaks like turned off unnecessary services, added 2 gigs of ram for 43 bucks, and added Microsoft office suite which I already had . The laptop is plenty fast enough. I use it to create powerpoint presentations, word documents, go on the internet etc. I also hook it up to a projector and conduct trainings which I contract to provide to a number of organizations. I have been using it more frequently than my desktop because of the convenience factor. Highly recommended.

It can only take a 2gb and a 1gb stick = 3gb it only has two slots.

thats a good question, you would hope they would put a single 1gb stick in there , but as the 12 sticks of ddr2 sodimm 512mb sticks i own can atest too, it is probably 2 x 512mb in there.

but hey maybe they have started putting 1gb stick in???

I'm thinking about this refurb. Has anyone tried a Compaq refurb? Specs look great, and 17" WS would be cool since I don't ever move my laptops.

It comes with 2 512 sticks...They are paperweights now. Given the computer is capable of dual channel RAM I put 2 identical 1Gig sticks in mine. That makes it fast enough In my opinion.

It is not capable of dual channel RAM. You can use CPU-Z to verify.

The 1280 * 800 resolution kills it for me. My current laptop is 1680 * 1050, but I could live with 1440 * 900 if I had to. 1280 is just WAY to low for me though.
