I am looking for a cheap laptop and encounter this website. The prices are quite low. You can pay by a credit card (not like FreeSpeech by PayPal). But what seems fishy to me is that the laptop you order will be shipped 6-8 weeks later. Anyone is living near their warehouse and knows something about it? Following is the contact info in the website:

MedNetPlus, Inc.

Asheville, North Carolina 28801
Warehouse
2000 Riverside Drive, Building 16
Asheville, North Carolina 28804

Telephone Number
828-281-7580
Fax Number- 828-251-9113

By the time they ship your notebook (6 to 8 weeks), the price everywhere else will have fallen to below what you paid.

http://www.mednetplus.net/stores.html
they have various store fronts depending on your needs (ie for students, for resellers, for people who want it quickly). check this out:

Standard - password protected (WTF?!)
Diamond - dead link
Resellers - dead link
International
Holiday - dead link
Students
Express - dead link

since im not a student, i would have used diamond. since i cant use that, then standard. and since i cant use that, i dont really have an option.

theres a lot of mentioning on the webpage about being a member, and member restrictions. i think they hook you up with some junk mailing or advertising. the faq says they dont sell your personal info but they can still send you spam. it definitely looks like a scam, but the whole membership thing makes me wonder if its something else. REGARDLESS, i would never in my life order anything from them. way too sketchy.

Perhaps they offer such dirt cheap pricing and long delivery times because they are able to buy these laptops overseas, in countries where the dollar is strong against the local currency.

And we could possibly use this to our own advantage by trying to pricematch with another online seller.

What do you guys/girls think?

according to this link:
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/mnp-students/info.html
"MedNetPlus, Inc. guarantees all products sold are in the original factory sealed box fully warranted by the manufacturer unless otherwise noted. MedNetPlus, Inc. also offers a FULL 10 day Money Back Guarantee if you are not completely satisfied with your product."
also, type STUDENT to get additional 5% discount!

something to ponder about yahoo shopping

<<
What is the Yahoo! Buyer Protection Program?
The Yahoo! Buyer Protection Program is designed to further protect the security of Yahoo! Shopping and the safety of our users. The program is backed by insurance provided by Lloyd's of London. Every Yahoo! shopper is covered free of charge under the Yahoo! Buyer Protection Program.
The Yahoo Buyer Protection Program covers any item purchased on Yahoo! Shopping as long as that item does not violate our terms of service.

There are two levels of protection: standard protection, which covers purchases up to $750, and premium protection, which covers items purchased with Yahoo! Wallet up to $1000.

If it's worth anything, seems they've also been acquired mostly by WorldCom, here's their press release.

At first i thought it's the WorldCom that we all know of, but it doesn't seem to be. if you go to WCCommunications.com it does look "flashy" (literally) but it's "coming soon". Checking the whois for WC you'll see all contacts have the Shortcorp.com address. When checking SC as well you'll see the site is also under construction.

Tracing further Shortcorp.com, it seems to be owned by the Benton Group (bentongroup.com). Not to judge anything by its cover but even this site seems "hastily made".

Then again, BentonGroup.com was registered around 1998. All the rest was created just last year.

Just a few more facts

I wonder is there is any possibility of pricematching to staples.com. I checked and staples.com has some of the same laptops as this site. I have to get a really stupid csr. Maybe someone can try it. This site looks like a scam. I think they are counting on people ordering and then cancel the order and pay the penalties that impose.

If they've just been bought by WorldCom, it'd make them more legit.

But that's just their statement, not necessarily the truth.

I have written to Yahoo about them...let's see.

i am sorry for the bold, but it is necessary.
DO NOT ORDER FROM MEDNET!!!!!
we ordered a sony pcg-540 for a "too-good-to-be-true" price last June, and it was never shipped! we were given the work-around, free upgrades, free money-back, letters from the CEO, etc, for 8 months until we contacted our CC company and got them to refund the money.
i have the paperwork to prove it.
just to reiterate...
MEDNET are crooks!
sorry i didnt see this thread earlier.

oh, and Worldcom buyout was one of their excuses!!!!

ForbiddenFruit, i am sorry i didnt catch you earlier, but i advice to cancel ASAP!
