It's not like this is some obscure fact that only policy wonks would know, it's the basis for the US' dealings with THE ENTIRE WORLD.

You are confusing Governors with the President my friend. Governors damn sure do not have the time to keep up will all the foreign policy decisions of the Federal Government. You don't have to be condescending just because we disagree on this point.

sooner, pretty soon he'll declare that your point of view has no merit, and that you won't "agree to disagree", because he is the great arbiter of such things

It is probably because you have Sooner in your name .

<--- OSU Alum

She isn't just some governor, she is running to be the VP and they have tried talking up her foreign affairs policy. She should've at least been briefed about this before the interview.

I don't disagree with you on being better briefed on this subject. It was probably a oversight of the McCain campaign due to the Bush Doctrine being dropped in the last four years.

I was at Willies with a musician friend of mine watching his band play this past weekend. It is sooooooooooo funny when I wear my OU hat in the lions den.

Edit: Fixed typo

I'm confusing nothing. It's a bad thing from a civic responsibility standpoint if your average joe on the street doesn't know the basic, fundamental policy that our country acts on. It's unforgivable if a governor of one of the 50 states doesn't know this basic fact.

It boggles my mind that people would be okay with one of the most powerful people in our country, who repeatedly talks about how she has foreign policy experience because she borders two other countries, not even knowing the basis for it. If you're okay with a governor running for Vice President so ignorant that they don't know this, that's your business. To say that they shouldn't be expected to know it is just absurd though.

EDIT: Oh, and the Bush doctrine has not been dropped.

The fact that she doesn't know what the Bush doctrine is shows that she really doesn't follow foreign affairs much at all. I don't expect the average American to know this, I do expect someone who could be CIC to know this. Especially in the world we live in today.

If you google 'Bush doctrine' you will find a few articles that speak of the death of said doctrine.

She certainly should have know what the doctrine is, but this is not the end of the world.

See now this is why you have so much trouble the rest of the time. You are unable to distinguish opinions from facts. I can think someone's opinion is absurd, but in this case it's just two people making a judgment call.

When I tell morons like you that their opinion has no merit, it's because they try to put their opinions up against facts as if they are of equal value.

The more you know, eh?

How can Governor Palin "not have the time to keep up with all the foreign policy decisions of the Federal Government" when her state borders two countries? She said right there in the interview that you can actually see part of Russia from Alaska!

GIBSON: You believe unprovoked.

PALIN: I do believe unprovoked and we have got to keep our eyes on Russia, under the leadership there.

GIBSON: Would you favor putting Georgia and Ukraine in NATO?

PALIN: Ukraine, definitely, yes. Yes, and Georgia.

GIBSON: Do you agree with the Bush doctrine?

PALIN: In what respect, Charlie?

GIBSON: The Bush -- well, what do you -- what do you interpret it to be?

PALIN: His world view.

GIBSON: No, the Bush doctrine, enunciated September 2002, before the Iraq war.

So what? She did not know specifically what Charlie meant by the Bush Doctrine. Her answer prior to Charlie clarifying what it specifically was revealed she did understand that preemptive strikes were part of the tools Bush used in the War on Terror.
So what? hahahahaha. She's a fcking moron. No wonder she wouldn't grant any interviews.

Edit: This reminds me of how McCain didn't know the diff between a Sunni/Shiite.

Regardless of articles, it has not been substantively modified by the Bush administration since its inception, and it is still the stated governing strategy of US foreign policy.

Once he explain to her what he meant she answered the question correctly.

When he said 'Bush doctrine' she didn't know what the term meant. That does not mean she doesn't understand the concepts behind the term.

Let's be honest here, how many people on here could have defined the "Bush Doctrine" prior to this interview??

It is not even written out. It is just a phrase given to a collection of Bush foreign policy ideas. Even Charlie couldn't completely define it when he said "The Bush doctrine as I understand it"

It was certainly not a great answer by her though.

I felt she tried to catch him with the "In what way" response. He almost lost it. I would call it a slight win for Charlie however as she wasnt ready for his non-answer.

A monkey could have "answered the question correctly". Exposing her as an uninformed fraud? Check.

Stated where???

That is the problem. There is no article some place called "The Official Bush Doctrine" Instead it is a collection of ideas based on a series of speeches Bush made prior to 9-11.

She should have had a better answer, but this is not the end of the world.

EDIT: Oh, and the Bush doctrine has not been dropped.

First: Sarah Palin does have limited foreign policy experience. You do not get a natural gas pipeline running through a Canadian province without negotiating with both the Provincial and Federal Canadian Governments. She is also the Commander in Chief of the National Guard in Alaska, which happens to be deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan, which she has personally visited during her time in office.

Second: Governors have no say so or effect on National foreign policy. They have zero reason to keep up with all the policies of the Federal Government.

Third: Point to me once in the last four years where the Bush Doctrine has been enforced? Have we invaded North Korea, Iran, Syria or even Pakistan? No we have not. In fact we are now having direct negotiations with North Korea, Syria, Iran and of course Pakistan. All these countries support and harbor terrorist, yet not once since Iraq have we invaded any one of the countries. The Bush Doctrine is effectively dead and has been for more than four years. There is no reason to study up on a doctrine we don't even practice.

Once he explained it, she summoned the correct scripted point. Slight difference.

If interviewer tries to force extended answer, repeat script ad infinitum (or is that ad nauseum?). Not that much different than her teleprompter standups with Senator McCain except for Charlie Gibson delivering lead-in to the script.

Well, yea. That's how one works the media. There is no obligation to answer any of the questions asked, though, eventually, the press will stop handing out free air time if she doesn't.

So which is it? Do governors have no effect on foreign policy (thus meaning she has no foreign policy experience) or do they? No matter your answer it absolutely is in the interest of governors to understand US security strategy because while they might not have input into it, it very well could affect them and their states... especially if you 'border' Russia as she so often likes to state.

And Pro-Jo, the Bush Doctrine most certainly IS stated. How can you not know this? It's called the National Security Strategy of the United States for Bush's second term!!

Jesus people.

Then almost no one, including Obama has business running for president since none of them really keep up with all these policies until they decide to run for office. You guys are setting the bar so high that no one should ever be president.

Nice try! I specifically said National foreign policy. The pipeline through Canada is a State foreign policy initiative . A Governor is only required to brush up on the policies of the countries they border, which palin obviously has.

I also specifically said the Bush Doctrine is dead in practice. You can state something all you want but all that matters is what you actually do.
