Another New Distributed Computing Project

I recently found this distributing computer project which I have been running for a day now. While the client has only been available for a few days, it already seems quite well polished. The program is not limited to Windows, but also includes Solaris, Unix, and other platforms already. The program itself is working on simulating protein folding for the purpose of medical research, but it is taking a different approach to doing so then Folding@home. There is additional information about the project here with technical details on the methods that are being used with the project. This might be a project some anandtech forum members might want to give a try.

I tried folding@home when I was first looking for a DC project other than RC5. I admired the nice screensaver effect. However, I was having problem getting it through my firewall that I gave up on it.

I just found this thread on Ars where the individual running the project has the following proposal for Pointwood.

Since you seem fairly experienced in this area, why don't you discuss amongst yourselves what are the 5 most important changes you'd like me to make to either the screensaver/client or web site/login/stats page and provide me with a comprehensive list and the names/e-mails of those who have contributed to it. If you can get a consensus among a dozen or so of you I am willing to implement whatever changes you request within reason. Provided, of course, they do not violate the law, our privacy policy, or common sense. >>



Pointwood is suggesting that individuals with ideas to improve the project post in the thread or contact him and he will let the project head hear the best ideas. There definately is an opportunity here to get the stats system or other aspects of the client improved with your direct imput.

You can try contacting the author to see if he has suggestions on what to check here.

I definitely like this thing, it's fast, hasn't had any trouble with our nasty firewall here, and seems to be a very achievable goal.

It looks like the individual in charge of the project has now posted to the ars thread I linked to, so you now have an opportunity to talk to him directly.

My client works now, probably just took a while for the handle to propagate to authentication server or something..
