Hmmm. If I spent some money on one I'd I'd build a PC around it. It's kind of fun to use 3dfx cards, I liked them too, and I'd love to try a V5 6K. (not enough to spend what they cost on it, but I'd pay $300 for a working one just to play around with.)

It's actually still possible to build a fairly modern system around a V5 6000. Their performance is about the same as a geforce2 ultra, and that limit was only because of the VSA-100 chips used at the time. In terms of pixel fill rates and memory bandwidth, it was as fast as geforce4 Ti cards. Simply amazing for it;s time.

From an update on the auction "I believe the card can work, but I have not been able to get this card to work."

And it's currently sitting at $700... :Q

well 700 dollars isn't too bad a price even if its half-working,
as I have seen the past sales of these cards going up to $800++ for partially working with some issues.
and almost a full 500 bucks for a dead card.

I think the only cards that would considerably appreciate in price over time are the final revision, pre-production models that actually work. Specifically, the 3700 models with PCB markings 210-0391-001-A. Those were the last pre-production batches made in mexico. And if it also comes with the big brick power supply, worth even more!, if you can imagine.

Not to badmouth the other older models, all of them are worth something, especially if they actually work. But the ones that everyone would scramble for (if they knew what to look for) would be these. That's the time to shell out the big $$$. The last one on ebay that sold for $1525 was exaclty one of these 3700 models. A very lucky winning bidder.

I happen to have it, its Canopus Pure3D.

Edit: found a review here. Good nostalgia trip.

isn't that a Voodoo Rush chipset? ( 6MB )
No, its like I said, Voodoo1 with 2 MB extra Texture Memory .
Only Canopus made those. Click on that link above.
It was top performer compared to other 3Dfx Voodoo cards.

Come to think of it, another rare hardware that's worth something is the original Pentium 60/66 with the floating point bug. In that situation though, it was made public, but i'm sure not too many with the bug have survived. Intel pulled them off the market really fast, provided warranty replacements, and most just threw them away since they were 'defective.' I'd shell out a little $$$ for one of those maybe.

Considering that I just upgraded my father-in-law's computer to a Dell, and he had an original Pentium 60 with the floating point bug, how much would you give me for this nostagic piece of hardware? Bidding starts at $1,000 ..... j/k

(And for the record, Solitare and email runs just fine on a Pentium 60.)

For a whole week this particular card has only 1 bid for $700. Looks fishy.. the seller probly knows the bidder personally. Not surprising though, it's an older revision card not guaranteed to work, and without the brick power supply. However, it looks like it's been modded to accept internal power from the case PS.

Don't worry. The bids for thousands of dollars will start pouring in soon. I've heard of people paying hundreds just for a broken capacitor off this piece of gaming history. They will only go up in value forever, because there are so few and everyone on the planet wants to own one.

well about over a year ago,
the same card was worth about 200 more then this..

so maybe the price is dropping.
as times goes on, the younger generations would not have heard of 3dfx anymore.

Well, this is what I've been trying to say all along. The days when the name "3dfx" means anythign at all to people are fading fast. You tell someone who wasn't a gamer a in the 90's you've got a video card that never made it to production from a defunct company that has no practical use and you want a lot of money for it, they're likely to say,"3d-what? Are you nuts?".
