Another W2K/W98SE Dual Boot Question

I have W2K on my machine as the only OS at the moment. I have an extra partition from which to run win98se. Using the 98 boot disk in drive a: and the 98 setup cdrom in the drive (where l: is my cdrom drive) I type:

l:>setup/ntldr

It is my understanding from reading the FAQ by SUOrangeman and Andy Hui that this command will preserve the master boot record while adding the new OS to the MBR.

Well, that procedure didn't work for me. I didn't try anything else because I don't want to spend any time with my w2k emergency repair disk in a:. Can someone steer me in the right direction? There has to be a way to accomplish this task without having to format and load win98 first. Right?

Nope.

98SE, along with its siblings, was not made to control multi-booting and must reside on C:.

But... if you do decide to install it anyway, you'd have to put it on C:, then probably do an "fdisk /mbr", and then pull out that 2K repair disk and pray... Alternately, you could try installing it on a different hard drive and making that drive the first one, while changing the drive letter designations in the now second drive.... and then do some funny magic to see if you can get the 2K on the other drive to write to the first drive's mbr...

Wow, I guess I misread SUOrangmnan's dissertation on partitioning and the FAQfor installing win98 after installing W2K. How disturbing. There has to be a way. Crap, I wanted to add win98se to my E: partition. I'm still convinced that there has to be a way. I'm just too much of a newbie to figure it out.

I did a Yahoo search - not even a google one. Here's one person's comment after you go on and install 98 with 2K already there:



<< Boot from your Win2k CD
2. Choose to repair your installation of win2k
3. Choose console repair
4. type: &quot;fixboot c:&quot; (without que quotes) >>



And thus you would theoretically be all set.

[EDIT: Oh and they said that during the 98 install, you can tell it where you want it to go. So tell it E: ]
