Damn this is discouraging! I really wanted to build my new box using the new Antec case and PSU. I hope this isnt a trend....

This exact thing happened to me...but it wasn't an Antec. I don't remember what brand it was. That's a nice smell it produces, isn't it?

I'd say if your motherboard worked fine afterward that something in the PS worked wonderfully.

I just bought a new Antec 1080 case as well with the 430Watt Truepower psu. I plan on using it for the new machine that I'm making.

It's a big mofo and talk about heavy, I think my last system with everything in it was lighter than just this case alone, but it's very sweet looking. There's places for fans everywhere and the hard drive bays detach on clips, the rails are stored on the bottom of the case and the nice addition of firewire and usb ports on the front make for a striking case.

I'm just hoping that things will go well. I have a virgin system ready to break in and bad luck usually follows me around like a curse. Is there something that I can do to test it out before actually hooking up the mobo? Hehe Like adding a couple of fans and just turning the psu on? If it was going to fry, would it be because it was turned on or cause of the load? I guess that's going to be random each time.

My Story

Doubtful. I'm very grateful that the computer I was building didn't get fried itself, but I think the sheer amount of smoke that poured out from the computer signals a bad part in the PSU. I?m talking a 3-inch thick blanket of smoke covering my ceiling. My mom said, ?Brian?..sweety?.. , what in the world are you doing in there, did you set your bed on fire again??. When I was 6 a friend of my mom?s brought over her 6-year old daughter, the little girl happened to bring an easy bake oven. In short, easy bake oven?s are ?NOT? safe.

For what it's worth, I had bad experiences with two Antec TruePower 330's this weekend. The first one came in an Antec Plus660 case that I just got. I was putting a new system together. First time I powered the box on - loud ugly sound from the PSU and some smoke. I pulled out the power cord immediately. After I double checked that every in the system was put together correctly, I attached a different power supply and everything came up fine. I am planning to request an RMA Monday.

I was in CompUSA this afternoon and saw that they carried Antec power supplies. I went ahead and picked up another Antec TruePower 330 to replace the fried one so that I could deliver the system I was building. I figured that I would use the replacement for the RMA'd one in another system sometime.

When I got home, I placed the new power supply in a known good system, just to check it out - BAM - same loud ugly noise and smoke. I don't get it. What are the odds of getting two bad Antec TruePower 330's? This is in two seperate systems, both which work fine with other power supplies. Neither box should come close to pushing a 330 watt supply. The second system is an older 700 MHz P3 that was using a 250W supply for years. I'll make a trip to CompUSA to see what number three does.

I know there are lots of people using Antec TruePower supplies and are happy with them. I just haven't found one that works yet!
