I'm confused. Currently, i'm looking at an OC i7-930 build with a Radeon 5870 + 6gb of DDR3 RAM and granted that this has more than enough juice to run that. I've read a few customer reviews on newegg that make it sound like a pretty bad PSU that burns out after a few months (!), however I've read reviews that say this unit is pretty solid and efficient. Not to mention that it's just 10 bucks more expensive than a corsair 850W unit. Does anyone here use this PSU? Have you had any troubles with it?

Oh and just to be clear, I intend on getting another 5870 (hopefully not too far in the future) to CF when a single one stops cutting it at high settings for most FPSs, which is the main reason i'm getting a 1000w instead of 850w. Plus, the price makes it so irresistible .

When a single 5870 stops cutting it in the near future, there will be better cards out. You will be better served selling yours and getting whatever the best single card then is. SLI/XFire should really be a "now or never" proposition.

With that said, that 850w will easily power the XFire.

NCIX has the XFX 850W on sale for $129.99 AMIR this week, and they often have the Seasonic M12D850 for around the same price (this week was $99.99 but it's sold out). Both of these would be as good as the Corsair HX850 (which is $155 @newegg.ca).

Personally, I you could lump the Quattro line into the same group as the Corsair HX850, XFX 850W, or the Seasonic M12D 850, I don't.

Why?

The Quattro line is cooled by an 80mm fan that gets quite loud under stress while the aforementioned three other units are vastly quieter.

The XFX and Seasonic models, which are basically identical power supplies, and the Corsair, a very well built CWT design, are in my eyes better built than the Enhance-build Quattro line.

The Quattro is not as efficient as the other three and those stupid cable sleeve beads at the ends of the cables are a royal pain to deal with when routing your cables.

And while the Quattro is a modular power supply, it's only very partially modular....and for some unknown reason, has separate 4-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS connectors hard wired to the unit, which means you end up having to hide the one of those long cables that you didn't use.

And even with a pair of 5870's in Crossfire with an i930 OC'd, an 850W power supply will be enough to power your setup without a sweat.

LOL, you don't even have to stress it for it to become noisy. I had a Quattro 850W and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. It was powering a really moderate system (dual core CPU, single 8800 GT) and it was by FAR the noisiest part of the computer. Swapped it out for an Earthwatts 500W powering the same config and it was a world of difference noise-wise, even though they both use 80mm fans and were powering the same hardware.

Wow, thanks for the replies! Didn't know that it was a noisy sucker. So, i'll probably be sticking to a Corsair 850W model. Will depend on the prices in April 2011, since my rig gets built then.

Mine stays nice and quiet. :scratches ass:

You probably can't hear it over your GTX 470. [drum roll, cymbal crash] :whiste:

Seriously though, there are about as many people out there claiming the Quattros are quiet as there are claiming they are noisy. I think it comes down to perception. The thing is... "silence" is absolute (lack of sound at all). However, "quiet" is in the ear of the beholder. If someone is coming from a noisy system then they will feel it is very quiet. If someone is coming from a quiet system already, then it is noisy.

True. I'm looking at efficiency and life as well. I don't see the point in getting a 1000w that only has like 80% efficiency when I can get a much better PSU that lasts longer for the same price.

About the noise, I have a crappy HP pre-built right now, with a Bestec 300w. Now i'm not sure if it's the GPU fan or the CPU cooler or the PSU, but that thing roars like a lion whenever I run a youtube vid =/
