Anti Virus

My Norton Internet Security 2004 is going to expire on Tuesday and I was wandering what would a good alternative be to this for Anti Virus Protection?

NOD32?
Kaspersky?

I have heard that Kaspersky is suppose to be pretty much a resource hog like Norton. Is there any truth to this?


I am going to be going with either Kerio or Zone Alarm for a firewall what one would you reccomend?

I'm a fan of bitdefender, it's never let me down and is not a resource hog like others. Right now I'm using panda because you get a free year (see hot deals).

i'd say mcafee gets the best detection rates without being as bulky as f-prot (doesn't it use two engines?) and kaspersky. as far as free antivirus software goes, get bitdefender free edition.

lol mcafee is not a memory hog. i've used it for a year or two. it used several processes, but never took up more than 50 megs. which version did you use?

rofl norton was never less bloated than mcafee. its a nice article, but i don't agree. perhaps it was because i used professional or a different version? whatever the reason may be, mcafee used several processes, but didn't take up as much ram. and i know that it took up much less ram than norton when it was idling.

The Enterprise version of McAfee VirusScan is much more streamlined.

I used NAV 2005 (the home version) the corporate version and older versions of NAV take up less ram. Mcafee was the latest home version with default options (security center was on by default).

See the screenshots of task manager that are linked when you click on the ram usage.

BitDefender Free Edition does not have real time protection. Antivir is your best bet (no registration, free, and has better detection rate than AVG or avast).

the best detection rate is kaspersky (overall), according to the malware tests done by trilobite.

Kaspersky, the best detection rate of any antivirus and they provide updates to the definitions almost every hour. See my review at schadentech for further details.

Your review has it in the mid 20's which seems kind of high compared to NOD but NOD32 scored well on one test and bad on another. The thing that scares me with KES is that I have read where it interfeared with some games but that was one revision ago. Not sure if this still persists with the new revison or not.

So would it be safe to say that if one was to use Kespersky along with Kerio or ZA one would be rather well protected?

I am still uncertain weather to purchase Kerio or ZA or just use the free one's.
Any reccomends for a good firewall?

the freeware firewalls (like sygate and keiro) work just as well as the ones you pay for

Try Kaspersky for free to see if it interferes with your games or not

don't go zone alarm...as wonderful as it is, I have found that zone alarm is too good at whaqt it does. If you are connecting to various protals, it will give you problems, but then if you just use your computer at home ( I have a laptop, and connect through at least 3 different domains in a week) you should be fine. I love sygate, been using it for a while now, and pretty easy. Not as user friendly gui as I would like, but not bad

What do you guys think of Look -n- Stop firewall?

I tried sygate and it seemed to block all my online games I couldnt figure out how to add my own allowed programs to the list. Other than that I really liked it.

Kerio pretty much the same deal as sygate but it did store it in program file after it blocked it and then I could change it.

Zone Alarm seemed to be the most user friendly for me very easy to configure and grant access before running the app.

When I tested NOD32 I liked it a lot. I never successfully tested Kaspersky because their site was messed up and their english links lead me to a russian version of the software.

pro has more scanning features. i would go for personal because it is cheaper and its realtime protection should stop anything that tries to execute itself.

Also I have always steered clear of trial version stuff because of the registry tracks left. Does this pose a real problem and is there a program that cleans out the registry of dead apps?

I found that while Kaspersky wasn't resource hungry, it significantly increased file read times vs other antivirus products in my usage. I like Kaspersky's sleek client and it's high detection rates though.

use add/remove programs to remove it, that easy. The only thing that will remain in the registry is the key to make sure you cant uninstall it/reinstall it and get another free trial. No risk, just use add/remove programs to uninstall it if you find it affects your games badly.

I would reccomend Kaspersky over any other antivirus product that you pay for. It has the best detection rate of any antivirus software (according to the tests of over 600 differant pieces of malware conducted by Trilobite at spywareinfo) and provides updates to antivirus definitions every hour. you cant beat that.

What do you use?

I use the freeware antivir, it combines very good detection rate (not as good as kaspersky, but Antivir has a better detection rate than NOD32 and uses less memory than NOD32, plus antivir is free and requires no registration, unlike avg. The only downside is no automatic updates, but you can update the antivirus definitions in about 2 clicks from the tray icon if you have it configured properly.
