oops . . . I forgot about RDRAM . . . does it need to be installed in Pairs? If so, it's 2x $69.
Start saving.
He's not in the US either.
Whatever, it's all relative . . . a NEW computer is gonna be even MORE expensive . . . my whole point was to upgrade the RAM or put up with the slowness.

just a thought . .. there is a way to get more efficient use of your measley 128MB RAM . . . run Win98SE.

It's still supported by Microsoft (at least via ME) and is not such a memory hog if you don't mind rebooting time-to-time . . . if you have an old one around, it's free and maybe worth an install (at least a partition) . . .

And for those programs that MUST have XP, you can dual-boot (and put up with the slowness).

Yes . . . you can still use MS Windows Update automatically over the 'net. I just did a system for a poor friend and 98SE updates into a pretty stable system (relatively).

If you have it it's worth a try. Just create another bootable partition if you want to test it.

I am too sleepy to stay up to try to remember details.

I think you can boot from XP CD to create another partition for 98.

If not there is Partition Magic that can do it easily.

If you are super cheap are are sure you want to do this, FDISK and then Format C: . . . Some Hard Drive utitities can also do this.

Do a fresh install of Win98 (make DAMN SURE you have the 98 Drivers from Compaq BEFORE you START). Run Win XP within 98 and CREATE ANOTHER PARTITION for XP. At start-up you'll have a screen that gives you a choice of which OS you want.

Install all your programs and docs on both XP and 98SE and your're ready to go.

Lots of time but NO cost.

Good luck . . .

aloha.

hey dude this is my final comment here.. i really think that if you are thinking of just spending the money on ram.. just dont get it.. it is not worth it in a few months you will need something else and u would stay on that base... i was going to get a new motherboard for my sisters computer if i could find any hot deals like they had last time for a free motherboard AR... other than that i probably wont upgrade it.. its useless and better to save for a new comptuer.. my sister do not play games at all.. all she does is download surf and chat.. so that is why i just wanted to upgrade her comptuer with a new motherboard and some DDR ram since her motherboard is SD Ram now..

just save the money wait later for a better upgrade kthx bye

If you can't afford a new box, wait a little bit. 128MB RDRAM would be good, but still just a patch to a problem--an old P4 will suck for general use. A Compaq will be bogged down on top of that, as well. And don't get another Compaq or HP . Everyone I know who had one has loved their non-HP or COmpaq PCs when they upgraded. I worked on quite a few of them, and...they were all bare minimum crap. Even the Dell 2400 series is nice in comparison.

So you're not in the US? Well, I guess see what you can do, but here's what I managed in the least few minutes:
-Biostart NF2-400 mobo. Most TNT2M64s were AGP 4x, IIRC, so it should still work fine. If not, Radeon 7000 cards can be had for under $40 USD.
-Athlon XP 2000+ retail (cheapest retail CPU).
-Geil 512MB PC2700 RAM
-Hitachi 120GB HD. This and RAM will make the difference for general use. I recently went from a 20GB 5400 RPM HD to a Spinpoint 120GB...very nice.
-Evercase black e4252 w/ 300w PSU. Nice price, the PSU will be fine for this kind of setup.
Ended up at $341 USD. That does not include Win XP. I don't know what SG is, but if you're a student, you might be able to get a full (non-OEM) copy of XP Pro for less than the OEM sells for--look into it. Some colleges and tech schools have it cheap. Otherwise, XP Home should be no more than $100 USD, but if you're in school for IT stuff, you'll likely want to hit yourself in the head at some point for not getting Pro.

Partition Magic would be the best way to do it without fuss.

I believe - this morning - that you need to do a reformat back to FAT32, install 98 and then make a partition for XP.

CRITICAL!!! I cannot stress this enough, you MUST have WIN98 Compaq drivers BEFORE you do this!

And now i'm back to work.

hmmm.. would u be laughing ur ass out rolling on the floor if i tell u that i actually using FAT 32 on my system now for XP? Im not very sure abt thisbut i think i delibrately choose FAT32 over NTFS. I had actually been reinstalling every few months. there is once i install NTFS when i install Win2k. abtthe security login i cannot go into windows. I lost my data as a result. wana go dos copy but i cant even view my partition!! i was told by a friend NTFS cannot be view in dos. i duno how true is that but since then i think i never use FAT32. though i will stop and think which to choose whenever i reinstall OS
Abt partition magic, hmm, i have heard many compliments abt that.. but then i never use before. most of the time i prefer to wipe out my drive and reinstall everything. I feel is more "clean" that way
As for the win 98 driver.... i think i had download already. But i will confirm it again if i really were to install win 98. now the problem is.. my hdd only 20 gb!!

*would u be thinking now... hmm the pc sucks!*

I'd suggest advertising your system in your local newspaper (or similar) and get a couple hundred bucks for it (or close.) Then budget carefully for an AMD-based system.

Something with an AMD processor of a 2000+ rating or better,
a good nForce2 motherboard with onboard SoundStorm audio (don't settle for less!!) and the onboard GeForce4MX graphics,
2x256MB RAM sticks (or a single 256MB if things are really tight, but video performance is cut in half with a single RAM stick.)
Case, keyboard, mouse combo...
and with whatever cash you have left, get the biggest hard drive you can afford.

And viola! A nice system on the cheap! But you'll likely have to put all the parts together yourself - a daunting task for a complete newbe.

That, or if you have a credit rating, get a Dell 4600 deal.... go to Anandtech Hot Deals and see if there's a current Dell 4600 hottie to pick up! You can spread out the payments as well as get a good deal **IF YOU SHOP CAREFULLY!** Dell upgrades are usually a lousy deal.
