romex from house panel to detached garage, stapling it 1 foot above the base of my neighbors wooden fence every 10' for support.


wished it was a chain linked fence. at least I could use the tubing on top as a raceway to hide the romex.

heck, I probably wont even need romex. just three thhn #12 wires (black/white/green), drill hole in tubing, and run it to my garage receptacle. then hardwire lights + garage opener to that receptacle box.

hopefully he wont tear down the fence (till after I move).

Actually would be neat if those small screw in terminal blocks were more common instead of wire nuts. Much more secure connection. Though wirenuts work fine 99% of the time.

If there's one thing that should be code though, it's BX in attics. Less chance of it getting chewed up by any critters that may find their way up there. But I guess the attic is treated kinda like inside the house, there should not be any critters there in first place.

You can also just run romex inside some pex pipe that you tie wrap to the fence. :biggrin:

Coating every wire with 6" of rubber prevents more fires.


Soldering every connection then shrink tubing those connections before wrapping in six inches of rubber insulation will never fall apart.

Because across the entire country, conduit is unnecessary. It prevents very few fires, because most fires don't originate in the middle of a run of wire.

No wire nuts? How do you propose attaching things like ceiling fans? Certainly you don't mean those back-wire things where you just push in the wire and minimal contact is made. Those things keep a lot of electricians busy; they fail fairly frequently; poor contact. ALL wire nuts are required to be inside electric boxes. If they fall off, they don't go anywhere. Metal boxes are required to be grounded. Any problem inside the box, the system is designed to trip the breaker with no fire.

I don't think I have ever heard "fire protection" listed for a reason to use conduit. It has always been for protection (of the wires themselves) and ease of pulling cables. Conduit is a pita to start with but once it is in it is far easier to work with later. I tend to prefer it.
