Searched around didnt see a hunting thread. I have been hunting deer since i was like 12, and never really killed a big buck. So I got unlazy and put out a few trail cams after scouting a new area, I was pleased with the result. I forgot to set the time and date correctly. How about you guys any one else do anytype of hunting.

Are those considered big bucks in TN?

I remember being amazed at the sheer number of deer down in the Smokey Mountains area, but they were all pretty small. Kind of the reverse in Maine (where I've done most of my hunting). You don't see many at all, but when you do see a big buck he's got a damn rocking chair on his head. Smart as hell too, I've been told if he makes it past his 2nd birthday there is a 90% that buck will die of old age. Having watched bucks let does and fawns check out orchards and fields first, I'm inclined to believe it.

Did you bait that area? Oak grove? Just a popular trail?

How are you hunting? Rifle? Bow? Black powder?

In the area yea, I hunt like 350 acres with 4 other people. Most shoot a spike or a doe and never wait to see if something will follow. But TN is known for some big deer. I have a mineral site there and its on a old logging road and a few persimmon trees in the area. The guys i hunt with wont go that far back its a good mile ride to the area. I hunt year round, with a cross bow this year bc I will have surgery on my shoulder next month. Rifle and muzzle load are my favorite time of the year bc less bugs and i like colder weather.

Yep, been hunting for many years. Hoping to get a few deer this year; went without the last two years. I'll be hunting a new area with my son - far more deer in that area than where I hunt, and a lot more big bucks. Though, I really don't care if it has a huge rack on it, unless it's mounting size. You can't eat the antlers. Good sized spike, 4 point, or 6 point are sufficient to me.

Plus there are the other furry woodland creatures that taste good (squirrels) and feathered creatures (grouse, pheasant, turkey) that I enjoy going after if I have a lot of spare time.

Plus, bow hunting. I've really been hoping to run across a nice 400+ pound bear while bow hunting. I've turned down smaller bears a number of times during shotgun/rifle season. I eventually want to get one, and it has to be a big one, and prefer to do so with a bow.

I used to hunt more when I was younger but then with work and stuff got out of it. started going again about 2 years ago. got my license for this year. Pretty much only hunt deer with a rifle. Not really into hunting but my dad is and it's more time I get to spend with him.

I am the same way, i hunt to fill my freezer early season. Ill let a doe walk during the rut in hope a buck follows. The deer on the right in the pic I posted is the biggest I have seen in years in the area I hunt. Really hoping he turns in a nice 10 and i get a shot on him.

Gun wise I hunt with either a New England Firearms 243 (my first Rifle) or a 300 Weatherby Mag. Blackpowed is a Knight Wolverine when they were made in Tn.

Until last year, I hunted with an 870 express, deer barrel (shotgun with slugs). Then I bought my son a 30 .06 and absolutely loved the gun. It's nice to be able to reach out 300 yards with absolute confidence, vs. 70 yards (with open sites).

When i hunt in thick area i use my 45-70, absolute tank. I wish i had a area where 300yds was possible, dense woods with occasion clearing is it.

Doppel, do you have any friends or family that hunts? I find the hardest thing for new hunters is just finding the land to hunt.

I don't deer hunt anymore these days since we don't have a freezer for the meat, but I never pass up a chance to go hog/dove hunting.

I do know TN is know for their big bucks. Those would be good size for here in west Texas though.

I have hunted, but it never really appealed to me. I love venison though. I suppose if I didn't know so many people who are always giving away deer meat I might have to go hunting to satisfy my craving for it.

My grandfather is a big hunter though. I think there are about 8 mounts that he killed in the store I run.

What's he doing bringing a loaded gun into your store and killing things?!

I bow hunt when in Germany...have killed a few boars and deers (2 boars and 3 deers over 10 years). I hunt to eat, not for sport. Owner of the land gets 1 leg from any kills, the rest is for me. I am reasonably proficient in butchering. And I make a nice haggis type dish with the pluck (heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, breast of the animal, all minced and boiled with spices in the cleaned stomach). One deer would typically last me a month if having meat every day or 3 months if not so frequent. A boar would last me 2-3 weeks if eating meat every day or 1-2 months if not having meat every day.

I recommend bow hunting as it requires much more skill as you have to get much closer to the animal and be a very good shot with the bow.

I hunt Mule Deer, Elk, Cougar, Coyote.

This year I drew mule deer tags, but did not draw branch antler bull tags, so it is another year of spike only elk hunting (not doing too bad with the spikes though, I am 3 for 3 so far for them).

An elk will last us most of the year, and a good sized mule deer will last about six months or so.

For deer I either use my Winchester Model 70 in .243, my AR15, or one of my .308 rifles. For elk I use one of my Ruger #1 rifles - in .375 H&H or .308.

Til you discover that all your pictures are of that deer during the night - never during the day. That deer is going to bed down at 4am, and never get up once during the day during the season.

Yea that would be my luck, i have them at other times right now movement is pretty hectic. I Do have a stand where a few were bedding last year, might need to check the area. I have hunted coyote before with no luck, no sure how to go about it.

Bait, and a good low light scope.

I know some guys in Princeton Maine who take coyotes with hailstorms of buckshot. Sometimes they get lucky and drop 2 or 3 immediately, other times they just end of mortally wounding the coyotes. I prefer a rifle because following a bloodtrail for hours in the winter can get old, quick.

I have hunted in Paraguay, Deer, boar. Seen tapir, cayman, armadillo, duck but those are more targets of opprotunity while hunting for deer. There are some big cats down there but I havent seen any.

I used to hunt a lot, deer, ducks, pheasants, and geese. Even used to go trapping with my dad when I was a kid.

Haven't done it in a few years, and kind of miss it.

Those are some nice looking bucks there.
