Where could I go to learn how to get into MTG? I had some friends into it a long time ago. I'd like to learn to play.
I find it very frustrating that in an era where they seemed to be pushing creature based decks... that there is a higher abundance of control than at any time I can remember...
Maybe once Zendikar rotates out I wont feel this way...
Let me just say... I hate when the metagame is full of "Draw-Go" decks.
I didn't know people still played. I remember everyone played it in the 90's but since then I thought it died.
They have international mega tournaments for thousands of dollars in prizes. It's far from dying out.
Sold all my cards waaaaaaay back when. It became unfun when they started making ridiculous deck building rules. What the hell is the point if I can't drop 10 of those blue insta-zapping blue dudes and nuke anything I want to from orbit? LAAAME.
i played during the revised to ice age era. it's too expensive, I hate the rare card dynamic, it's stupid. I have a ton of cards though and what I do is get 4X common/uncommon when a new set comes out for like $25 then I print full color proxies of rares. this makes the game more enjoyable, people should be able to use the cards they want without having to spend a few hundred dollars on a deck. printing them looks almost as good (put them in plastic sleeves and there really is little difference) and it only costs 10 cents a card. so you can print 100 for the price of one decent rare card.
something cool about this method is I also have a 4x set of unlimited, arabian, antiquities, legends. it's pretty cool just to have that in binders and flip through it and look at all the old broken cards.
But you don't actually have any of the cards, and none of it is legal at an actual tournament. So you are only having fun with yourself, and there are much easier more enjoyable ways to have fun with yourself.
The cards do not cost hundreds of dollars, in fact only one T2 card that I know of might be worth more than a hundred, most rares are worth less than $20. If you buy a booster box from the new released set for $100, you'll get minimum 37 rares. Through trading you'll easily get all the cards you want. There's only 155 cards in the set and 500+ cards in the booster box.
oh yeah, look at the newest set, you can get 4x common/uncommon for like $28 on ebay. the set has 45 rares, so I can 4x the thing for around $46 total. that's much better than a booster box for twice that which will probably get more than 4 of each common, around 2 to 3 of each uncommon if you're lucky, and 36 rares, a few of them mythic. with trading you can probably get 4x common/uncommon and 1x half the rares or something for that $100, yeah it's all tourney legal, and you could draft it with friends, but i like to have all the cards possible showing up in the draft.
I don't know, I still hate the game due to the rare cards and I know that actually is what keeps it going unfortunately, it makes it a very flawed game, unlike a board game or chess or street fighter where everyone has everything they need by just sitting down to play, it's just a different game and the fact that dumping more money into it to stay competitive just doesn't work for me. I prefer games where all you need is your wits.
