I played from Mirage to about Tempest. Ebay'd most of my cards. I miss my red/green and black decks.

Where could I go to learn how to get into MTG? I had some friends into it a long time ago. I'd like to learn to play.

I was a very active tournament player until a couple of months ago. I loved drafting, but this new set wasn't doing it for me and neither was type II, so I decided to call it quits for a while. I'm sure I'll be back.

I just went to the pre-release in Columbus for the new set... 2HG sealed is my favorite format, however I can only play that a few times a year at the big events.

Sealed/Draft >>>>>>> Constructed. Constructed is just some bull-shit meta-game anymore.

Have there been any newer Slivers I can add to my Type 1, five color Sliver deck?

I'd suggest checking locally for a shop that runs tournaments. Hobby stores or comic book shops maybe. Our store does regular MTG tournaments as well as other games like D&D. Get a deckbuilder's toolkit to get started on cards, it's the cheapest way. I don't think wizards has a list on their site, you'll just have to look around. If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them.

I find it very frustrating that in an era where they seemed to be pushing creature based decks... that there is a higher abundance of control than at any time I can remember...

Maybe once Zendikar rotates out I wont feel this way...

Let me just say... I hate when the metagame is full of "Draw-Go" decks.

There are answers for control too. One card I need to get is Brave the Elements and my deck will be almost perfect. Going to see if my local store has some for sale tomorrow when I pick up my new booster box. 36 packs of awesome!

I didn't know people still played. I remember everyone played it in the 90's but since then I thought it died.

They have international mega tournaments for thousands of dollars in prizes. It's far from dying out.

Semi old player from when revised and the Dark were new. Sold off most of my stuff a few years ago, recently started playing again with some friends. Seems like the new cards are more powerful than some of the older stuff. (Lots of cards that do multiple things.)

I tied for second tonight at the tournament. I would have hit first except the one card I needed didn't get drawn. I potentially could have gotten 2nd outright if I hadn't made one mistake. Best I've ever done and through trading got some more cards to add to my deck, it is seriously sick.

i played during the revised to ice age era. it's too expensive, I hate the rare card dynamic, it's stupid. I have a ton of cards though and what I do is get 4X common/uncommon when a new set comes out for like $25 then I print full color proxies of rares. this makes the game more enjoyable, people should be able to use the cards they want without having to spend a few hundred dollars on a deck. printing them looks almost as good (put them in plastic sleeves and there really is little difference) and it only costs 10 cents a card. so you can print 100 for the price of one decent rare card.

something cool about this method is I also have a 4x set of unlimited, arabian, antiquities, legends. it's pretty cool just to have that in binders and flip through it and look at all the old broken cards.

Sold all my cards waaaaaaay back when. It became unfun when they started making ridiculous deck building rules. What the hell is the point if I can't drop 10 of those blue insta-zapping blue dudes and nuke anything I want to from orbit? LAAAME.

that was the prodigal sorcerer, or tim, named after tim the enchanter:

if i had 1 of these, it was bad news for you. 2 were domination

But you don't actually have any of the cards, and none of it is legal at an actual tournament. So you are only having fun with yourself, and there are much easier more enjoyable ways to have fun with yourself.

The cards do not cost hundreds of dollars, in fact only one T2 card that I know of might be worth more than a hundred, most rares are worth less than $20. If you buy a booster box from the new released set for $100, you'll get minimum 37 rares. Through trading you'll easily get all the cards you want. There's only 155 cards in the set and 500+ cards in the booster box.

err, I do have lots of legal cards, like I said I get 4x common and uncommon. i sometimes buy cheap 25 cent rares. I'm not into the tourney scene, would rather just play the occasional game with friends. I made a cube that played pretty well, but that has all sorts of very expensive cards in it so proxies are the only way, i doubt many people play it with the real cards, it has the power 9, duals, etc. I almost have every set in a binder, most of the cards 4x of them, it's like a history of the game even if a lot of the cards are proxies.

what I want to get around to doing is draft some crazy combinations together, like legends and urza's saga, something out there, just randomly pick out a bunch of cards from each, shuffle it up and draft it with some friends and see what happens. I like drafts better than constructing because I have friends that will play but don't build decks so it keeps it fresh.

oh yeah, look at the newest set, you can get 4x common/uncommon for like $28 on ebay. the set has 45 rares, so I can 4x the thing for around $46 total. that's much better than a booster box for twice that which will probably get more than 4 of each common, around 2 to 3 of each uncommon if you're lucky, and 36 rares, a few of them mythic. with trading you can probably get 4x common/uncommon and 1x half the rares or something for that $100, yeah it's all tourney legal, and you could draft it with friends, but i like to have all the cards possible showing up in the draft.

I don't know, I still hate the game due to the rare cards and I know that actually is what keeps it going unfortunately, it makes it a very flawed game, unlike a board game or chess or street fighter where everyone has everything they need by just sitting down to play, it's just a different game and the fact that dumping more money into it to stay competitive just doesn't work for me. I prefer games where all you need is your wits.

I did Alpha, Beta, some Revised and one deck of 4th edition. Got tired of the cost and quit (I was in Jr High and had no real job, just mowing lawns.) Wish my mom hadnt thrown out all those cards.

I played the Microprose game and it was awesome. But doesnt work right on anything but Win98.

PSA:
If you dig around the internets theres a special hacked version for 2010 that works great on Vista and Win 7. But I wont tell you how to find it.
Its MUCH better than the new version on Steam. And that BattleGrounds version isnt even worth looking at, its not the same thing.

Etherlords 1 and 2 are almost as good, and they play on XP and Vista.

It is not flawed and it's stupid to compare it to chess like that. It is infinitely more complex than a simple game like chess. You play with fake cards in random games with friends, none of it is real. I think you should go play some real games with real cards before you start throwing out opinions.

used to play ALOT.
those expansions that came every 3 months sucked ALOT of $ out of me. Proabably $1k/yr.

stopped when my local comic book store went out of business. they held non-sanctioned tourneys every week. next closest place was a heck of a drive, so stopped playing.
then mtg online came out but by that time i recovered from my addiction.

this thread made me look for my mox/lotus/juzam deck. and i cant find it.
it's not with all my other boxes and binders of mtg stuff in my attic. it's been like 5+ yrs since i last touched it. Where the hell is it?

oh my god.. just looked up the price of a black lotus on ebay. $1k+?!?!!

Edit:
I have a sealed box of black border Renaissance from 1995?! HOLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

edit2: only $200 in ebay
