Any opinions on Cincinnati??

I'm about to graduate with a BSCS degree. Offered a job doing .NET, Java on a contract in Cinci. Pay is 40K, I'm hoping for some relocation. Coming from Michigan, any thoughts on Cincinnati as a place to live, cost of living, recreation, etc.

Ok, guys, moving to cincinnati for sure now. i'll be working in mason (cintas) and am planning on living kind of near there. i'm not a partier, so i'm not too worried about the bedroom community. Looking for any specific advice w/ apartments, etc near mason.

I lived there for the last few years.

The worst part of town is just north of downtown. High crime area. Single bedroom apt. is approx. $400-$600. Can't tell you about houses. State sales tax went up to 7% I believe... used to be 5.25%. There is a state income tax. Every other year your car has to pass an emissions test; other than that there are no annual vehicle inspections or anything.

Cincinnati airport is across the Ohio River down in Kentucky about 10 miles away. Cheaper to fly in or out of a nearby city such as Indianapolis, Columbus, Dayton, or Louisville.

On Labor day their is a huge fireworks display and other activities down along the riverfront. Usually a couple hundred thousand people attend. Paramount King's Island is up north of town on I-71. Typical Six Flags type amusement park but I hear Cedar Point up north has better rides. Cincinnati Bengals got a new stadium a couple years ago. Reds have a separate stadium. College teams are popular there. I never cared about Cincinnati sports so I'm no authority on them. Also there are ski slopes which I've never been to. It's called Perfect North slopes. They have to manufacture their own snow some, because it doesn't snow frequently enough.
The Kentucky side of the river opposite dowtown Cinci is a bit of a hot spot. Lots of new businesses investing in that area. Movies, clubs, shopping, etc. Don't ask me about the club scene though, I've only been to the Yucatan Liquor Stand on the river bank.

Hey! I did the same thing last year. I moved from Grand Rapids, MI to the Cincinnati area. I would NOT live in the city. The downtown area looks run town and has a bit of a crime problem. I have an apartment in Fairfield, OH. It's a one room apartment with a fireplace on the 3rd floor for about $600 a month. I also rent a garage for one of my cars for another $50 a month. If I were you I'd do it. It sure beats the job market in Michigan.

i was in cincinnati on business earlier this year, stayed in a hotel on north end near tri-county area

one night i was watching the 11:00 news and they were reporting from the scene of the 4th shooting in the city since 4pm that afternoon...

Suburbs of Cincinnati are good. Fairfield, Forest Park, and that general area are nice.

I miss living there. I am stuck in Iowa, and there is between jack and you know what here.

I miss the WEBN firework show. Used to go every year. Also miss having decent concerts to go to.

I also miss Goldstar and Skyline

Not the best place. Depends on what area you are moving too.. There are good places and bad places, just like any other city..

Are you going to be working in downtown Cincinnati area or around Cincinnati?

Fairfield is saturated, Forest Park is full of housing for poor people (high crime).
West Chester is getting too big now.. Mason is place to be.

my sister lived outside cincinnatti for a while (northern kentucky) while her husband was working in the city. they liked it there. I don't know how it is for a just out of college single, but it was a good place for a young family. nice zoo. good chili.

Columbus turned out to be a very nice city, so is Cleveland.

I work in downtown Cincinnati and have done so for 2 years. Never felt threatened or in danger...and I walk about a mile to and from my car every day. WHere will you be working? I live about 30 mins from downtown in a nice city. You can PM if you would like to talk about it.

Traffic SUCKS!! Horrible traffic.

But, not a bad place. Decent cost of living. Rather conservative city, though (no open containers outside at, say, a festival...at least afaik) If you like to go to a Bengals or Reds game, don't wander far from the stadium. Downtown Cincy just isn't the best place to hang out. The airport is actually off of I-275 in Northern KY.

Mason is the place to be. Just avoid FACS group. They only have whites and blacks....Maybe 2 brown people....
