Any reason I should upgrade my good old E6600 oc'd to 3.4 for a 920. I mainly just game. You guys think my cpu will last me another year until the next rehash of chips? I am already going to grab a 5870 in the coming months and possibly an intel ssd if the prices drop a little more. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Probably not. I would get the 5870 first and see if you're dissatisfied with your gaming performance at all.

Yeah, I am in the same boat you are. I came to the conclusion that my games just aren't enough to justify spending $400-500 on new MB/Proc/RAM just yet. I would definetely suggest the ssd though. I have one and now I can't live without it. It doesn't seem to make much difference in games, at least that I can tell, but everything else is much faster. It is nice when the OS is up and functional in less than 30 seconds.

No.

But it sounds like you want to? Then why not.

Not really. But have you considered possibly dropping down to a 5850 and either saving the difference or spending it on upgrading the CPU/mobo/ram/etc?

With the 5870 or possibly even the 5850 you are going to be CPU limited. You certainly don't have to upgrade unless your playing with a 24 - 30 inch monitor and Crysis.

I'm thinking of a cpu upgrade too, and have been asking myself if the few extra fps of a q9400 is worth it, as an i5 (and all that i'd have to change) is out of the question.

he won't be cpu limited at 3.4 unless he plays supcom, gtaIV, etc, and that's just b/c those titles use the cpu more than most games.

how bad is it that almost anything out there today will run maxed out on a 3 yr old cpu?

If you have to ask the question about whether to upgrade then you already know the answer.

Forget the 3yo CPU. My E6600 is sitting on a Rev 1.0 965P-DS3
X800GTO, X1950XT, 8800GTS (G80), 4850 and now 4890 - all on the same CPU/mobo and have been running like a champ!

Grab the video card first since its something your already destined to get.

See if ur happy with the system on a new videocard.

If not, then you upgrade.
